FPS games in which nearly all enemies use hitscan weapons it's better to have regenerating health, because if it uses a health item system and you have low health, then you have to play the game stupidly slow and constantly be behind cover to get through. In a game like Doom it would be terrible to have regenerating health, but the segments in Half-Life 1 with a shit-ton of soldiers would be a lot better with regenerating health. I can't tell you how many times I've played that game and get to one of those sequences and having to constantly crouch slowly around corners while flinging grenades and satchel charges hoping I hit something. It's not fun. tl;dr hitscan weapons are the problem, not regenerating health. I think Space Marine handled it perfectly, though.

>i have to take cover and aim rather than spraying like a mentally retarded chicken with its head cut off but thats okay it will regenerate
item based health is fine so long as someone fucking playtests it a few hundred times before release
>>
>>321981185
Item based health is fine if you can fucking dodge projectiles. Loading a save in Opposing Force with like 10 health left is a pain in the ass when there's a chopper overhead that's too far away to hit with anything and will randomly hit you, killing you instantly.

im having problems with wolfenstein because of the enemy A.I.

The game gives you plenty of health and you can even overheal but enemies never and hit you even when you are hiding and shooting using cover. It's annoying as hell.

This a thousand times. I was expecting rtcw gameplay and instead I got a cover shooter. How anyone can call it old school is beyond me
>>
>>321982141
This is why people still play Doom as much as when it first came out, while Wolfenstein is just "That one old FPS with the nazis".
Hit-scans are the bane of good FPS

Regenerating health is fine if it's slow enough. For example, Fallout 1 has regenerating health, but it's so slow that your character needs to rest for days to fully recover, and your quest is urgent so you need to decide whether you want to waste time getting better, spend money for meds, or risk traveling wounded.

war of the monsters.

it would be fun by having others run away when they seem to be losing and the other guy chasing them down to avoid them regenerating health
>>
Helldivers
I can't imagine the fucking mess it would be if players had to call in med-packs drops every 30 seconds and fight for health drops on top of everything else
God knows depending on the medic to not be shit was annoying as fuck in Alien Swarm
