It's basically a Halo MMO. The "single player" content is pretty minimal and it's meant to be played with friends, althought Taken King did make for a much more congruent narrative than the year 1 content (where the story was extremely vague). The PVP modes are great, too. Not quite as sprawling as Halo's, but still a lot of fun.
The big thing that a lot of people seemed to miss about the game is that I think they were expecting something more along the lines of Firefall, but Destiny doesn't really have a big sprawling overworld like a traditional MMO. Maybe in the next game they can focus on making the different areas feel larger and more seamlessly connected, because the long load screens are my biggest complaint about the game. If they added a little Star Fox-esque mini game where you could shoot down enemy ships while traveling between planets it would improve the game a lot, although otherwise I would say just make the load screens be faster and more seamless-- like, try to create the illusion that you're actually traveling, and can see the planet and environment zooming toward you with no fading to black.

I think that's the point. The space people are supposed to be weird and creepy. They're meant to be all unsettling and shit to show that even though they share the same kind of silhouette as us, their time living in space has made them something distinctly separate from humans.
That's another problem with Destiny: The lore and fluff are cool and well fleshed-out, and have the ingredient for a great series/universe/story, but even the lore itself is all hidden away in those fucking grimoire cards that you can only read through a web browser by logging into the Destiny website. Like, if they spent so long conceiving and writing all that cool shit, why hide it away? Why not have some flavor NPCs to wander the Citadel and spout shit about the lore if you choose to talk to them? If I have to go that far out of my way just to read some video game fluff, I might as well just get up and grab a book.
