What are the best SRPGs?
>>
Dead genre coming through
>>
Summon Night 3
>>
>>321930250
I've always avoided it but want to get into it.
>>
Tactics Ogre PSP
Front Mission
Fire Emblem 4
>>
>>321930592
>Front Mission
Which? The first one for the DS?
>>
>>321929778
Fire Emblem
X-COM Enemy Within
>>
>>321929778
The final fantasy tactics game have great diversity, so they don't get stale too quickly. Though they can get pretty easy if you know what you're doing. All great (FFT, FFTA and FFTA2)
Tactics Ogree game aren't as diverse, but they have the great stories. All are a must (TO:LuCT, TO:tKoL and Ogre Battle 64).
Despite whatever the hell you hear here, Nis game make pretty damn good (gameplay wise) sRPGs (Disgaea series, Makai kingdom, Soul Nomad).

If you want somethjng western you should definitly get into the X-com series and Jagged Alliance 2 (arguibily the best srpg ever).

Also Vanillaware Grand Knight History is a favorite of mine.
>>
>>321929778
FE7 and FE8
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor (both iterations)
>>
>>321930828
Yeah that's a faithful port and has the extra second campaign from the PS1 version. Good title to go for.

The two campaigns are very different though I might mix up names here. One is the OCU I think where you play a mercenary group working for some combination of Asia/Australia army and the other is America. The OCU campaign is the original and the 'easy' campaign and functions like fire emblem where you recruit a shit ton of people most of which you will never really use or develop and use 10 or so people every map.

The American one is the other side of the story where you play as a super moralfag special forces dude and that's the hard campaign. In that you have very limited units. You start with 3 dudes and by the end of the game you have 5. You use all of them every mission and money and upgrades aren't a concern because you have so few to use it on. Has a totally different gameplay style to the easy campaign and I personally preferred it.

The story in Front Mission is also super good, it kind of reminds me of the Ace Combat games in how it's laid out.
>>
Wild Arms XF
Growlanser 4
Gungnir
Front Mission 4 and 5
Tactics Ogre
Final Fantasy Tactics
Yggdra Union

Jagged Alliance 2 and X-COM if you consider them to be part of the genre.
>>
If you're wanting to start Fire Emblem do 'Fire Emblem' on GBA (Known among fans as FE7). It's the best starter and has a decent mandatory tutorial that will be a grind if you already know how to play FE.

Be aware though that some shit it tells you is stupid.

>Do NOT promote your units at level 10 holy fuck, do it at 20 if you can. Only sooner if you absolutely have to
>Do not use your seemingly super awesome promoted guy to wreck the early missions, and you will soon find you wasted all the experience on him and he doesn't progress much meanwhile the units that would develop are useless and it's too late in the game to fix that
>>
>>321931851
>Only sooner if you absolutely have to
Really you can do it at like 15 and it's just fine desu senpai you don't need to get to 20, it's just recommended for those sweet min/max people
>>
>>321931070
>FFT, FFTA and FFTA2)
I want FFTA3D so bad you don't know man. Ivalice is my aesthetic, especially the Elementalists.
>>
>>321929778
Disgaea series
Soul Nomad
Final Fantasy Tactics (I like the advance games too but your mileage may vary)
Tactics Ogre
Fire Emblem series is ok
SMT: Devil Survivor 1&2
XCOM
>>
>>321929778
Super Robot Wars Alpha
>>
>>321931070
Shit forgot 2 more from NIS, bonus points for originality:
Phantom Brave
Zetai Hero Project.
>>
Sakura Wars
>>
>>321932624
ZHP isn't a SRPG, it's more of a rogue-like than anything.
>>
Great games:
Fire Emblem 5
Front Mission 2, 4, and 5
Growlanser IV
Langrisser II and IV
Tactics Ogre LUCT

Also good:
Fire Emblem 9
Valkyria Chronicles
SMT devil survivor
wild arms xf

By the way, is anyone working on the Summon Night 5 voice patch? I'm looking forward to playing that.

One anon said he's still working on it.
>>

Yeah if you hate yourself and have a crippling need to see yourself fail
>>
Stella Glow is really good, pretty easy though.
>>
>>321932915
Whatever you decide to call it, it is still a must play if you want to play some strategy games.

Terranigma is the best game on the Snes console.
You are welcome

Oh I get it. He said SRPGs so you assumed that means SNES RPGs.

Front Mission 1

(By the way, play Gunhazard if you like video games even slightly, it's the best game on SNES)
>>
>>321931851
>>321932056
Sacred stones, bitches.
>>
>>321933773
I liked it, wont say its the best but I definitely had fun playing it through and through.

And may as well, big fat ninja tats best girl.

fuck you anon.
>>
Fire Emblem is pretty much the best series in the genre
>>
>>321934489
>Terrible RPG mechanics
>Shallow amounts of "strategy" required
>Poor balancing
>Typically shitty story
>2 dimensional characters
haha no.
>>
>>321934489
Fuck no, shit gets stale too fucking quickly. TO is a better series, FFT games have much better gameplay too.
JA2 alone blows the whole series out of the water.

What do you guys think about yggdra union? It's been on my backlog for a while and I finally have some time to play it, what should I expect?
>>
>>321935385
It's good but pretty unorthodox as Sting games usually are

If you like it give Knights in the Knightmare a go too (3DS version, don't touch PSP)
>>
>>321934784
you forgot the most important thing
>probably the only game in existence that punishes you for being too lucky
>>

Sorry, DS, not 3DS

>>321935385
It's a pretty decent game.

It's a Sting game however so expect weird mechanics as always.
>>
>>321935385
>We'll never fight alone
I bet the game gives you the ability to fight solo.
>>
>>321934784
>>321935052
>>321935573
Fire Emblem is one of the only SRPG series that actually puts a lot of focus on map design and layouts. A lot of other SRPGs will just have you fighting in a giant square full of tiles and focus more on your units' numbers. In FE, the focus on map layouts means positioning is super important as well.
>>
>>321935713
Not really actually, the only time a character fights without other soldiers is if they've been wrecked and they're the only one left
>>
>>321935816
Except awakening and I would assume fates that adopted a more disgaea approach to SRPGs
>>
>>321935816
Okay I suppose you have somewhat a point there.
>>
>>321935950
Nohr fates is really strong in terms of map design
>>
>>321935816
clearly you've played too many shitty srpgs then because off the top of my head i can name T:O, FFT, Disgaea series, and XCOM as being games where map layout is important
>>
>>321935950
Depends on which version of Fates. Hoshido has some maps that are like Awakening where the maps are just very open but almost all the maps in Nohr are like old FE with chokepoints and well crafted layout.

Nohr Chapter 23 in particular is pretty GOAT.
>>
>>321934361
I'm just saying it doesn't need to be 20, especially on your first playthrough
>>
>>321936145
Nah, I've played T:O and FFT and I do really like that they add elevation to the map design. XCOM seems good about it too. Haven't played Disgaea though.

It's still undeniable that a lot of SRPGs fall into the giant empty square category though. It's one of the reasons I dislike FFTA2, it has more of those than either of the two previous games.
>>
>>321936520
>It's still undeniable that a lot of SRPGs fall into the giant empty square category though.
I dunno if it counts as a "lot", but nonexistent map design is also one of the main things that turns me off from playing a SRPG
may as well just be a normal turn based RPG at that point
>>
>>321936145
The problem with TO is that it always boils down to the same because you ALWAYS start at the bottom of a hill in every fucking map
>>
>>321929778
Xcom enemy unknown is the best srpg ever made.
>>
>>321935385
It has a few annoying quirks, but it's still one of my favorite games in the genre. It's one if the few that actually requires some semblance of tactics.
>>
>>321937110
It's not even the best X-COM game.
>>
Why is this genre so fucking dead? Fire Emblem and X-COM are the only active franchises for the genre and even then X-COM is wildly different comparatively. Not to mention the absolute non-existence of any traditional SRPGs on PC besides the upcoming Disgaea port.
>>
>>321938258
FE has a bigger focus on wafius now among other things. XCOM has something I suppose.

Disgaea's still kicking kinda as you said. But otherwise outside of the occasional SRPG we get(Stella glow Summon night 5 ect ect) unless you know Jap in that case you'd be swimming in a variable fuckload of SRPGs to pick and choose.
>>
>>321938968
What are the best untranslated SRPGs? I've heard of Berwick Saga, Sakura Wars 2-3, and Summon Night 3. Is there anything else?
>>
>>321939149
Sakura Taisen 3 is one of the best games ever made. Summon Night 3 is great too.

Black/Matrix I guess I hear good things about it. Made by the Summon night guys. I knew someone who played Wachenroder he said that one was pretty alright as well.
