Upgrading from GTX580

I only game at 1080p and want to know if the GTX 970 will serve me well for at least two years or so

Thoughts, /v/?

>3.5GBVRAM

I know

Upgrade your ram to at least 8

Probably. I play at 1440p and for most modern games I can play on high settings and get consistent 60fps
>>
>>321925748
have 16GB of RAM already, use PC for video editing and photoshop as well as gaymin.

All I want to know is that if I buy this card today will it be an awesome upgrade from the 580 cause the 580 has been a beast up until now, I can't play Just Cause 3 on max settings 'cause the card just can't handle it with the 1.5GB VRAM and PC heats up like a bitch.
>>
Former GTX 970 user here:

You will be fine (as long as your processor isn't shit). I was able to play pretty much anything at 60 FPS on 1080p with no major compromises. Only thing you might have to do is turn off some of the more demanding gameworks stuff and some of the more demanding AA stuff.

I switched over to a 980ti, but only because I have a 1440p monitor.
>>
Get an R9 390. Performance will be better over the long run and the 8GB of VRAM is going to last a long time.

Ok I'll give a bit more info on specs

CPU: i7 2600k
RAM: 16GB Corsair vengeance
GPU: GTX 580 MSI Lightning twin frozr
Noctua fans all throughout to cool shit down

Thanks for your input. Normally i go top shelf for pc stuff and would spend more cash on something like 980ti but I haven't got double the money at the moment and don't plan on going above 1080 any time soon. Cheers anon.

I will consider it

because it's very hard to find information on people who have come from an older card such as the 580 to a much newer card like this, I figured if any cancerous fucks would know it would be dickheads on /v/ so forgive me for the ignorance friend I will attention whore all I want you cna't do shit about it gayboy

It will, that particular brand is actually the most solid, cool, quiet card I've ever owned too - so I can vouch for it

Pretty much no one is disappointed with a 970 on a performance level, the 9XX series is now so popular games are almost being made for them, and yields somewhat superior performance over cards with a higher spec on paper

Either way whatever card you get; upgrading from a 580 will blow your head back. You're probably looking at over 4x the power

thats great to hear, thank you anon I think I will go with it.

Ok so I'm planning on building myself a new PC after being stuck with a trashy prebuilt toaster for a few years but my friend keeps telling me to buy another trashy prebuilt when I'm pretty goddamned sure I can build something twice as powerful as the prebuilt that he keeps recommending me for the same price as the prebuilt trash. Am I right about my assumptions or am I wrong?
>>
>>321928284
what's the trashy prebuilt in question?
>>
>>321928595
It's not a specific prebuilt but he keeps telling me a fucking prebuilt is better than anything I could ever hope to build but he did send a pic of some fucking ASUS "gaming" laptop with a GTX 980M that is probably well over a thousand dollars due to the fact that it has "gaming" in its name
>>
>>321928284
you're definitely right.

>>321928934
not only you're right, he's also a fucking retard.

also I was stuck with a trashy prebuilt for a while too, now it belongs to my mum and sister. That thing's mobo reaches 84 degrees celsius. I hope they'll be fine.

Well, considering how close pascal is.

It seems smarter to buy a 1070.

Depends on what type of games you will be playing. Especially with VR

If your going to be playing really demanding games for a long time anything above a 960 before pascal comes out seems kinda dumb.

a 970 wont cost so much when 10xx comes out but a 1070 will probably last you 4 years
>>
>>321928934
correction it was a fucking asus rog g752 in the pic and it costs fucking $3,500
>>
>>321926351
He says he'll game at 1080p, so 3.5 won't really matter.
>>
>>321928284
Budget?
>>
>>321928934
It really depends on the pricepoint oyu'r ejumping into. Sub $500 investment, go prebuilt and drop in a medium-low tier graphics card. If you're going bigger, start from scratch.
>>
>>321929368
around $600-$800 I was looking at building something within the great to superb range on logicalincrements

No.
