I was wondering about pic related. Is it bland? How does the story and characters hold up?

My favorites are FFT and TO:LOCT. I like the Disgaea series too and Valkiria Chronicles 3. Couldnt stand Jeanne d'Arc nor the original VC.

I played it for awhile until I got bored somewhere in the middle, it remains pretty bland throughout, I got the same feel of that game when I played the Jeanne game on the PSP. If you just want to rush through stack acc+ items on the axe guy once you get him, dunno if later on he falls off, but up to where I stopped playing he could wreck anything if he was able to land hits on them.

Not sure if it counts, but I have been playing the original XCOM (UFO: Enemy Unknown.) I was expecting it to be okay and age terribly, thinking all the praise it still gets to this day to be nostalgia goggles. It's actually that good. The best tactical game out there.
Though if you are looking for something more conventional in the Japanese sense, the GBA has two mad underrated SRPGs:

Tactics Ogre: Knights Of Lodis
