What went so, so horribly wrong?
you pathetic attempt at a meme thread
Level design
inb4 some fag tries posting git gud, HM2 had shit level design and that is a fact. Compounding that is the forced mask bullshit that took away HM1's player choice so they could shoehorn in a story nobody asked for.
Not only that, but they haven't even released the level editor proper yet, nearly 10 months after launch, and what's to come is basically going to be a castrated tool that doesn't even allow for custom sprites or music.
>>321896256
git gud
>>321895010
Its good
Nothing at all.
casual fanbase wasn't ready
>>321896635
do you have more ?
>>321896256
I like the idea of having a set of masks for a level, but the way the levels are designed almost never have the masks skillset in mind. Also all of the war levels are awful.
The swan girl is my waifu.
>>321896847
I got you Famicom
literally nothing, it had great characters and story and it was harder than the previous one
>>321895010
Nothing.
Its better than the first game in every way.
Why are people so mad about change?
>"I didn't want no story"
>"I always used different masks, not only Brandon, the best mask"
>"Leveldesign is different, it must be bad"
The only really bad thing is the rng of the enemy ai, which can totally fuck you
I really really liked Wrong Number, especially Pardo.
>>321897075
there is no rng in the AI, you high?
Enemies shooting you from off-screen that make the only way to beat a level first try to blindly spray in the direction you are walking.
>>321895010
The level design was about the same in quality and so was the story. The music was better, but them taking out masks and replacing them with guns and characters was what ruined it. That was really the best part of the first one.
>>321896909
>war levels
>shit
they had the best fucking music

I thought that those mask wearing characters were just edgy tryhards and kinda lame. The cop guy was cool though and very handsome.
>>321895010
It's another one of those times where someone was just making a small thing and people blew it way out of proportions. The community started building these huge goal posts for two guys that didn't even want to make a sequel.
It was ok, but ok didn't fit the expectations that the community set for itself.
They wanted to expand on a concept that doesn't lend itself well to being expanded upon at all.
I guess I can't really blame them since HM1 did well for them.

I hate those people who only want their 15 minutes of fame.
Detective pardo, on the other hand, is the detective that searches for the craftiest gangster of them all, the miami mutilator. you have to love detective pardo
It's a damn fine game anon
I love you thanks

oh boy i sure do love shift look:the game, especially when its a sequel to a game with extremely tight levels

You can't really get all those S-Ranks in hotline miami 1 without shiftlooking all the time.
Honestly, wider levels make the game harder, which is a good thing. the first game was very easy, compared to the second.
I like myself a challenge

sorry but that's what it is
getting shot from across the map isn't difficulty, it's just tedious bullshit
>those graphics
>no multiplayer
>typical casual indieshit lacking true penalty of death
>mostly gets praise for its soundtrack
You know what went wrong?
The devs fucking up and making a game about a bunch of masked freaks instead of a real killer like the miami mutilator, a case that handsome detective is working on.
shit missed one
>>321898442
I love this game but this anon gets it
Second one should have been around tight corridors and melee weapons like the first one.
Will there ever be a fucking hotline Miami movie? I know drive but i'm talking about the exact same shit.

Nothing, you're just bad at the game, you couldn't learn its rules and you ragequit. Go cry on reddit.
It was a mixed bag of fucking excellent levels and awful ones. The fucking dock level.
>>321899692
*general
>>321898442
>getting shot from across the map isn't difficulty
It is when you're supposed to be aware of enemy patrols and positions
Unless you bothered to try to memorize the layouts of course you'd get fucked. It's a fault on you, not the game itself.
and a bonus corey
>>321899796

Great level on normal. Retarded on hard. Great track though.

Can someone explain this meme to me? Tell me what was wrong with it, because it's actually one of my favorite levels - it's insanely fun chaining together all those fucking rooms.

>>321899986
>It is when you're supposed to be aware of enemy patrols and positions
And how are you supposed to be aware of enemy patrols and positions if you get shot before you can ascertain their positions? You're basically relying on the AI to hesitate in shooting you while you spray and pray to find them.
>>321895010
Too many characters, worse level design, overreached with the story. Still enjoyed it, but definitely a step down from the first.
>>321900309
That one Son level where you're in the club and you have a ton of smaller rooms while there's big guys patrolling around in a square. That one was a bitch to combo in 1.
Also the GET A GRIP level was GOAT.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DyCtfd8w6JQ
>>321900334
Easy to bait out
Though I guess if people can't appreciate that aspect it'd be hard as hell to clear that room
>>321900393
Shift look literally solves that. And unless you have the memory of a goldfish, you'll utilize your mental ability to learn from trial and error.
>>321900373
we ... grab some pizza later
Simma hen is the worst track in the game.
>>321900686
>you'll utilize your mental ability to learn from trial and error.
>HM2 is a shit garbage fucking trash where did it go wrong blunder of the year game because you get killed before knowing some random slav was waiting for you behind a window with a shotgun

Nothing. It was a great game.
/v/ just didn't like it and recieved it poorly because god forbid the devs actually do something refreshing with the game.
If it had been exactly the same as before, with next to no narrative and small cramped levels, they'd cry over them taking 3 years to make a rehash.EDITOR WHEN
>>321901554
its out
nobody cares about the game anymore to give the slightest shit about making levels
>>321900908
Difference is that Souls has very few OHKO enemies/situations, so even if you get facefucked by an enemy you can still live long enough to win. HM2 puts enemies outside of shift look range, arms them with guns that kill if they so much as graze your foot, then force you to restart the whole level if you can't predict where they are before you encounter their bullets.
>>321901554
>do something refreshing with the game
You say that like they radically changed the game in a novel and interesting way. All they did was lock masks to levels, spread the levels wider and spawn more enemies with guns while keeping the gameplay and art design the same and not adjusting it to accommodate the new level design.
>>321901835
For real?
God dammit.
>>321895010
> Little to no mask selection
Which is partly what made the first so awesome
>>321901846
You forgot the part where HM2's levels are incredibly short compared to Souls. If you're really that much of a bitch that replaying less than a minute to get to the part in the level you died you should probably stop playing the game, which I guess most of the pussies who whine about it did. On Hard they're actually insane with the placement of enemies, some levels are disgustingly hard because of bullshit, but on Normal it's completely fine.
>>321901965
Beta.
>>321895010
Nothing. It was a massive improvement over the original, so much so that I can't even play the first one any more without getting bored from how easy it is.
>>321900686
>literally admitting the game is trial and error
That's the exact the problem we have with it you fucking retard.
Making the levels based on trial and error makes them tedious as fuck to complete as you have to redo the entire level as soon as a new patrol pops up for you to memorize.
Camping and holding the shift key works kindof, but that slows the game to a crawl and gets rid of any combo you had going from killing enemies. Sure, you can get a good combo going like in HM1 if you memorize the entire fucking level, but the design could have been VASTLY improved if that was possible on your first try.
>make a fast game with tight level designs, good replayability, and interesting but mostly nonintrusive story with some dope ass beats
>make the sequel exactly the opposite of that
>>321902292
>but the design could have been VASTLY improved if that was possible on your first try.
desu souls games should give you a map telling you where all the enemies are and where you should go
>>321895010
it got a shit fanbase
Took too long for the editor to come out.
>>321895010
Off screen bullets causing death
Long-winded story with a shit ending
>>321902419
You don't need to know all about the level from the start, I meant being able to figure it out as you go along, just like Souls games.
Exploration and discovery is not getting killed by random bullshit without warning. Being punished for something you could only avoid through memorization is terrible game design.
>>321895228
I bet you feel real dumb now, faggot.
Limited mask selection
Shift look required to not get bullet raped from one direction
Peek-a-boo strategy required
Literally impossible to beat using pure melee
But at least the soundtrack is GOAT
