Well that's basically the definition of "edgy", isn't it? So it's not inaccurate to say that Persona 3 is edgy.

Are you at all familiar with chuunibyo? That may answer your question. Apart from just referring to middle-schoolers with delusional problems, it can also refer to:
>Gothic themes
>Brooding characters with innate powers
>Generally the powers have to be restrained in some form or another due to them being dangerous
>Need special means to 'release them' that happen to look cool to certain people (e.g. shooting self in head, removing glasses, eyes changing color or glowing, removing bandages from arm, etc.

And so forth. It's a very specific kind of 'edgy' that has been pretty popular among certain demographics in Japan since at least the 90s. Persona and to a certain degree SMT in general is an example of it. Why is it a thing, you may ask? Fuck me if I know, it just is.
