Are there any platformers you can think of with RPG elements?

Even if it's just a comprehensive item inventory or some form of leveling up.

I saw this coming, but come on SPM is way too story-intensive to ever be called a platformer.
>>
>>321842656
Half of the Castlevania series, big time.
I feel like most of the later ones concentrate too heavily on loot drops but Symphony of the Night is a straight up action RPG.

Aside from that, though, I can't really think of any but I'm sure they exist.

Iji

Freeware game made by one dude, plays out like a 2D version of Deus Ex/System Shock

Shit art, fantastic soundtrack, good story
>>
Ratchet and Clank has inventories, (basic) Leveling and upgrade trees for guns.

Deadlocked had a mod system that allowed 10 stat altering mods (+ % firerate, damage, annoying capacity) and 1 transformation mod (ricochets, leaving magma behind, mini bombs etc...)

True but I wouldn't say Ratchet and Clank has very many platforming elements. More like an action-adventure.
>>
>>321843465
Arguably, the best ones of the RPG Castlevanias are Symphony of the Night, Aria of Sorrow, Dawn of Sorrow, Order of Ecclesia, Portrait of Ruin, and Circle of the Moon. They're all extremely good and you can't go wrong with any of them.

Play Aria before Dawn though since Dawn's a sequel.

The devs have pretty much admitted that they're only marked as Platformers because they want to win awards but don't want to compete with better games like Halo

Every Ratchet game except the original isn't a platformer, Deadlocked is full on co-op TPS

If you're trying to show him how good the soundtrack is, though, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0c0Ha-O09aY is probably a better example of the game's tone

This is a problem with most Indie 2D games. They could have decent graphics, fun gameplay but the soundtrack almost always sucks compared to actual retro vidya.
That's the main reason of why games like Cave Story or Undertale are so popular.

Do 3D platformers count?

Ratchet & Clank series

Your HP levels up when you kill enemies and your weapons also level up the more you use them.

I love this game more than anyone else on /v/. It's an all-time great to me. The music is done by the same legendary composer who did the Dragon Quest games.

It has grindan, evolvan, and very skill-requiring/difficult bosses.

yeah EVO was one of the first games to genuinely have grindan. in my opinion it is truly the first because you aren't "leveling up" so much as just grindan points forever.

I am so good at grinding in evo that I can go back and remember all the fucking exact spots i used like 20 years later...

beautiful game, beautiful soundtrack, a must for people interested in animals and evolution.

if you can make it past king kuraselache, that is.

>Final Fantasy I

a turd. there's a point where you're going back too far to have any fun, anon. it wasn't fun when it came out; trust me, i was there.

Please play SOTN. As someone who has played video games since 1986 and owned basically every console and PC forever, SOTN is the best single player video game of all time. Easily.
>>
>>321846512
I know but I do find the atmosphere and music charming. But at this point the grinding has ruined it for me and I'm putting too much time into too little of a reward I'm guessing.

SOTN is next on my list now. I have been re-exploring the vast PSX library and I don't know how I originally overlooked it.
>>
>>321846929
>I know but I do find the atmosphere and music charming

Then play FF2, FF3 (the snes ones), chrono trigger, secret of mana, literally everything they did on the SNES. Their NES games are not good.
>>
>>321846929
Why hello, as a representative from the Final Fantasy threads of /v/, I've been sent over to inform you that suspending your Final Fantasy I playthrough to play Symphony of the Night instead is perfectly acceptable. Do carry on, and have a good day.

Also, in case you aren't aware, all the early Final Fantasy games have multiple re-releases in various handheld consoles.

Just stay away from the iOS releases of V and VI.
>>
>>321843503
Just finished that the other day, was pretty fun. Worth at least two playthroughs, though I was mildly irritated that the game semi-berates you for murdering alien invaaders, no matter how justified they might be then again, there's probably a definite difference between the occasional kill in self-defense (which a pacifist run allows), and having a kill count in the 300-500 range in single combat.

I'm just being autistic about it. I always drop games that I struggle with, and i said to myself 'I'm going to beat FFI before I move on to other games'. And yeah I know the GBA remake is a little better, but others have told me the PSX release isn't bad. I just want that old-school RPG feel but then I rememer the 5 other 2D FFs that were probably much better.
>>
Xardion.

Fucking nobody has played this game and it pisses me off.
>>
>>321847879
FFI isn't good. It doesn't matter what version you play. It doesn't have what makes FF games good. It doesn't have characters. They are just generic templates. It barely has story. It has extremely forced grinding syndrome. The locales, enemies, and music don't hold a candle to the SNES stuff which is where the series shone.

It's just a waste of time. You don't need to prove anything to anyone.

While I don't agree with >>321848032 that the game has no value, I'd caution you against the danger of forcing yourself to play through the game only to reach the end and be burned on JRPGs to the extent that you don't feel like trying the others anymore.

At this point FFI can be safely treated as a game that is worth more as an experience and as a foundation of what came after it than as an experience that stands on its own two feet. In that sense, I'd say playing the GBA or PSP re-release instead would be more advisable.

If you want difficult old-school RPG feel I would recommend you III and its re-releases, which have a more fully-fledged story and characters, as well as the excellent Job System that was introduced there and later perfected in V.

they exceed not only most other FF games but most other video games in general. I'm sure they're not as "fun to play" now but FF2/4 is where FF finally came into its own as a masterpiece

I really wish my man could've given the game all the little touches he mentions in this video. The menu screen bordered with vines and roses like he mentions would've been really nice. Perhaps Ritual of the Night will feature such a presentation.
>>
>>321848668
Well I was under the impression that Anon wanted to experience the evolution of the series as a progression, that's why I suggested III first.

>>321848741
Phantasy Start is a wonderful series too and you're giving its fans a bad image.
>>
>>321848565
I'm inclined to believe you, and yeah I've alreaddy gotten some value in how approach RPGS (having played very few before this) as FF I makes you really value your inventory over anything else. But yeah at 15 hours in and being only at the cavern of earth i think i'm gonna take a break.
>>
Valdis Story: Abyssal City, a metroidvania style platformer/hack n' slash game with RPG elements. Between the four different characters you can play as, their different weapons and magic, their unique skill trees, and accessories and armor that can radically alter your strategy, there are a lot of different ways to play the game and it's pretty fucking awesome. I've got like 75 hours in it.

Came here to mention Unepic. It's criminally underrated.
By the way, try changing the in-game language to "Unenglish" some time to see the original translation.
>How asshole I am? This is hallucination fuck!
>>
I can think of one platformer with RPG combat.
>>
>>321849171
Unepic is interesting in that it blends platforming and exploration with the sensibilities of a DnD campaign or some kind of dungeon crawler. It has some traps, which I wish more games would have. I like that the combat in the game is mainly strategic. Waiting for one patrolling humanoid to turns its back and backstabbing it, then shooting another one that gets alerted before it can reach you, leaving you to dispatch a final one in a one-on-one fight, that sorts of thing.

>Rogue Legacy, which is a game I could play for literal years

you honestly have really poor taste in video games and don't know good gameplay.

Rogue Legacy was one of the worst and most lazy video games I have played in my entire life. The platforming/action controls aren't good and the randomization works against the game because it's so lazy. The main gimmick of the game is pointless

>oh look everything's backwards
>welp, restart
>>
>>321849760
Rogue Legacy is one of like five games that has made me experience buyer's remorse in my adult life and I sincerely discourage anyone from purchasing it.
>>
>>321849906
The controls are simple and effective, and the game has a neat little cycle of learning how enemies work and countering them. I don't know what you're talking about on that regard. Only fault I can find with it is that stacking multiple jumps breaks the game something fierce.
>>
>>321849684

2nd for this game if you can stand the saccharine animu magical elementary school bullshit. Pirate it or find some way to get a non-localized version, though, because the guy the company uses for localization imposes his own insecure sensibilities on the games he translates.
>>
>>321851093
>Everyone needs to play this one on Sega CD
The bump combat in the PCE and earlier versions is actually really satisfying and the Sega CD version Working Designs fucked with is terrible in comparison. You're SOL if you can't into moon, though
>>
>>321851268
No, it's intentional. Especially given the story.

>>321851479
Yup, he made them in an ancient version of Blender, manually animated all the walk cycles etc, rendered them from the side one frame at a time and then cleaned up the finished sheets.
>>
>>321852490
He definitely gave a shit when he made Iji. The aesthetic might be offputting for some people (I actually like but do not love it), but the game has fucktons of secrets and other cool stuff.
>>
>>321849684
Yeah. I have a friend who loves most Metroidvanias but didn't like Unepic because melee attacks cannot hit multiple enemies at once.
It's kind of essential to the gameplay, I think. Forces you to strategize, as you said, or rely on more than just melee attacks.
>>
>>321852694
The aesthetic certainly takes some getting used to- Remar himself even poked fun at the deviantArt-tier cutscene images in a presentation later. It's somewhat ugly (okay, it's really ugly), but the whole presentation of the nearly endless facility and all the detail put into the props, backgrounds, etc in combination with the soundtrack made it one of my favorite game settings of all time.
