I love the first one because it came out when gaming for me was nothing more than platformers and brawlers and shit like that and then MGS came out and it was basically everything the rest of the games up to that time (on consoles, mind you) weren't.
One of the most durable marks it leave on the industry was the new standard for VA in games (anyone remembers the VA of the PS1 generation?) and how console games could carry political themes and still be successful (Again remember that PC gaming up to that point was the "mature" platform with the fanbase being several years older than the console one).
MGS2 and MGS3 follow the same pattern with a new generation of players. Both were awesome, MGS2 perhaps a little more ambitious with its themes while MGS3 being more focused but shallower.
MGS4, PW and MGS V were disappointments but all had saving graces, perhaps MGS V being the one with less saving graces.

You expect that a follow up to improve on what the previous one had room to improve. But by doing so MGS V created shit ton of new problems and also carried over things from PW that worked on PW because it was a handheld game designed to be played on short play times but MGS V still carried over a lot of decisions that were made for PW alone despite MGS V being a full release to play stationary on a console or PC.

The camera is shit all day in MGS3: Snake Eater. You can't see shit in that game. It was bad in MGS1/2 as well, but at least those were human buildings so it was easier to tell apart the enemies from the structures. But 3 is in the jungle. And overhead camera in the fucking jungle. Half the time all you see on the screen is trees and grass and shit. It's garbage. There was a reason they put out Subsistence, they knew it was bad. But I never played that one, so in my mind MGS3 will always be shit

Nah the camera was bad because most 3D games at the time were struggling with the camera. MGS1 isn't as bad as people make it out to be, actually is pretty OK compared with other games of its time, but MGS1 kinda cheated by being a almost a 2D game in design.

Then you're probably underage. I know that once I actually grew older, I realized that they are not as good as you thought they were. Retarded anime plots and characters, stealth gameplay that is trumped in every way by competing titles like Chaos Theory, and ridiculously cutscene heavy narratives.
V is probably my favorite now because it's gameplay is actually really fucking solid, and it doesn't have toooo much anime retardation in the plot because it's almost nonexistant. It was the final nail in the coffin for me and made me realize that this series has been built on promises that it's never been able to keep. I still think 1 is alright as well, but 2, 3, 4, and PW are all simply outclassed by other games. Sure they're quirky, sure they have some interesting characters scattered across them, sure the plot is incredibly intricate, sure the technology in 2 and 4 were neat at the time, but all in all, the whole series is just...meh.
Can't wait for MGS6 to be announced and marketed as the final "missing link". Just like every other one.
