God, no. Even Prince is piss-easy. Settler is for 6-year old girls.
Start on prince. All you really need to know is go Tradition and go heavy on food. Production will sort itself out for the most part. That's more than enough to win on Prince and gives you a foundation to git gud. If you still suck, play an OP civ like Polan or Inca.
>feel like playing some civ
>great fun at start, exploring and settling cities
>wars are fast and decisive
>middle-late game comes

The Rationalism tree is OP and is almost always a must-pick. Tradition is the best in most situations for Ancient era and can be used for both tall and wide civs. Liberty is useful but only conditionally better than Tradition. Piety and Honor are extremely conditional and can generally be ignored if you are new.
Commerce and Exploration have some good picks low in the tree but going all the way down the tree is unusual (exploration is useful for maritime-heavy maps, but not your vanilla continents map). Patronage and Aesthetics are only useful if you're aiming for a culture or diplomatic victory.

>have no units to defend except a pikeman
>have tons of gold from trade routes/luxuries, buy two long swordsman
>crank out units in all 3 of my cities, some ranged and siege units
>capture his capital, declare peace
>some 30 turns later he declares war on me again, with no fucking units
>brings his butt buddy Gandhi into the mix, have a two front war
>raze one of Tuscany's city, pillage India
>be declared a warmonger, tensions building between other civs
>scared daddy Rome is going to rape me with his state of the art musketmen soon
Can't fucking eliminate Tuscany without being a warmonger, but if I don't eliminate him he'll turn all the other civs against me.
>>321798853
I would learn by just playing a 1v1 on prince difficulty on a large pangean map and no barbarians. It'll take a bit longer to play out but this way you will focus more on culture, economy, unit maintenance, and create your own strategies.
After a while of playing you will literally need to reroll map to not get an op start.
Once you layout what to get and when, especially at start, rest is smooth sailing.

Does anyone else fantasize about her?
She's such a fucking cunt. She spends the entire game expanding her empire to monumental proportions and taunting you every step of the way. If you are unlucky enough to share a border with her, you absolutely need to keep a massive amount of troops stationed there at all times. When you finally do take her down it feels so sweet. I like to imagine my soldiers storming her royal palace, bursting into her room, ripping her dress off letting those massive knockers come pouring out. At first she resists, but then she starts to like it.

Religion gives you global boosts. Like culture from all plantations or production from fish. Its initial boosts are small, but grow substantially over time. If you get something like Mosques and Pagodas, every city goes from adding -4 to your happiness to -1. And gives you tons of extra culture/faith which can be used to get quicker policies/units/great people.
Religion is my favorite part of the game actually. The only real issue is, there's no religious victory condition. Which really should be added in Civ VI.
>>321809860
I think you might have played a bit too much. Maybe take a break? Play different games? You might need professional help tho...

If you go one of the 8 different religious beliefs that focus on culture it can. The hermitage belief adds +5 to both Culture and Tourism in the city with the hermitage. Then stacks with all the bonuses in that capital. If you're playing France or Brazil, that can be upwards of 25 tourism and 25 culture a turn from that one religious belief. And of course, Pagodas/Mosques/Cathedrals which all give culture.
I tend to go for religious beliefs that give happiness. For faster early/mid game expansion. Pagodas/Mosques/Cathedrals just do both. Which is why they're kind of overpowered.

Not even sure what I had done since I only once did a little incursion in the form of converting some of his people to my religion well over 200 turns before.
>>321824517
I like them both. They're so different it doesn't matter if one is better than the other, which I found really nice. It wasn't a straight clone of previous games, so it was like exploring a whole new game, to some degree.
anyone want to play?
how should I make the options?
>>321824610
I want to invent a time machine just so I can go back in time, find the guy who first thought that completely opaque diplomacy would be a good idea, and punch him in the stomach until he learns to think.

Don't even get me started on that little fucking bald cunt
I would rape him with a butchers knife if I could

Here is a guide I made just before Gods and Kings came out.
http://pastebin.com/VpRKkwYu
The tips and stuff I give are from the perspective of having played other Civ games and the idea that each Civ game is built around a core system of game fundamentals (even if it's not immediatly appearent in Civ5).
>>321824517
Pretty much. It doesn't help that Civ V vanilla bordered on unplayable as well. It's kind of insulting when you need to buy a game twice just to have it actually work in the first place.
>>321825145
Vanilla wasn't to bad, but it did only like 3 ways to win, whereas the complete expansions gives you much more replayability and options
>>321825394
It really was bad though. Even once they'd patched it to fix the most glaring of the balance issues, the unit balance was completely fucked and every unit having 10HP was a complete joke. Plus loads of other smaller things, like embarked units dying in one hit.
EVERY FUCKING GAME
EVERY GOD DAMN FUCKING GAME I FUCKING JOIN FUCKING KICKS ME
WHAT THE FUCK?!
>>321825919
That depends on how you like/dislike the sort of stuff. It was still playable enough and fun. But there's certainly no denying the expansions are the superior experience
Post your favorite mod civs

Religion is basically a new form of influence. If you have the same religion or at least ideology as someone else, they'll be more inclined to be friendly with you. Though they wont' hesitate to turn on you should you do something they hate.
Trade routes are like the resource trades, except they have fixed items traded between the civs and can last much longer than "Gold for iron for 10 turns" like what you do with leaders

How do I improve my play? I get completely gassed in the mid game and lose focus on what I want to do to win.
>>321827915
Does this mean that Civ starting impressions are gone now or is this just another way to warm up relations?
I feel like inter-civ trade routes would be hard as hell to manage with barbarians roaming the map.
>>321828493
They're still about the same at the beginning, but now with religions, they can be somewhat more easily swayed to your thinking if you have similar interests. Granted, it's not perfect, as I said, you can have trouble with others even if they're the same religion.
>>321828445
Snuggle up to whoever is taking over the world the best and bribe them whenever someone tries to pick a fight with you.
Building and maintaining relationships is a great way to win games, just don't be afraid to pay out the ass in the beginning
>Picking off trade ships with submarines
ez gold
>Declare war on Sweden because he keeps spreading his religion on me
>He's on another continent
>No intention of going over there
>Send a couple of destroyers to attack his coast cities
>Make a mistake and get two of them killed
>Retreat and just give up on attacking him
>He eventually wants peace and gives me a city
Thanks I guess?

Convince me not to reinstall Civ: I fucking hate the gameplay as its just a cheesy stupid board gaem, but the prospect of historical scenarios and tons of achievos are tempting.
I'm not sure this is the best place, but I want to conquer Catherine's sweet Russian ass

I feel like there's nowhere else for me to go with this game. It's why I stopped playing.
>>321830731
What kind of bullshit have they pulled?
>>321830731
personally I always found the scenarios in Civ 5 more compelling than the base game. Playing those on Deity/Immortal was the most fun for me.
>>321830731
Install a shit ton of mods, don't the description, put all settings on random, try to figure out what the fuck is going on with your game.
>>321831672
*don't read the description
So, why aren't you playing the infinitely better version of Civ 5?
>>321824646
>relying on the pc to vote you as world leader
The only way to do that is to have the majority of city states be your ally, get the forbidden city for the extra votes, have globalization with all your spies as diplomats and being in charge of the UN.

Don't know. I've never asked them to vote for me. I've always been able to outvote them.
>>321830731
