Super Mario World is hands down the best platformer ever. Probably because most platformers these days are either too easy or laughably hard. Super Mario World had just the right difficulty and pace.
I wouldn't say it's the best, but it's definitely in the top 5 for me, and it's the most creative and imaginatively designed platformer I've seen.
