Most of the monster attacks are done by accident as stated by the game itself. The monsters do not know they are hurting you, so when you calm them down your soul stops being attack.
The 3 out of 4 occasions hostiles try to kick your ass you -have- to violently maul them to death.
The fourth one can be avoided easily and you even befriend the dogs by the end of it.
