find lowest rated (1-3) and most average (4-6) in genre you are making
play them
don't do what they do but if you like it do it better

Don't make something similar to cave story
Make the protagonist a pansexual multiracial genderqueer.
I imagine anything can possibly work but most people like things that are pleasing to the eye so make sure your graphics are at least half decent. You'll reach a broader audience that way.
