It's far from perfect still, but it's better than how it was in the past. Usually, I will get ghosting or somewhat blurry effects during cutscenes, but the main game itself is fine and clear, though it's not the exact case for every game. As long as your computer is fairly good, you should be able to get through most games, though you might find yourself tweaking settings often like the other anons mentioned.

Most games can be played from start to finish with minor hiccups here and there (usually graphical glitches). Some games are just plain impossible or require an insane amount of tweaking.
There is still several frames of annoying input lag in many action games where that actually matters.
Other than that PS2 emulation is pretty great
Almost all the games run fine, if you are having problems running them in 1080 and such just run native, also look up patches for games before you start them up

A few of the games I wanted to emulate don't work too well. Timesplitters FP has pretty bad graphical glitches which make it near unplayable in parts, while Shadow of Memories locks up no matter what, which is unfortunate (although this also happens on the PS3).
Generally pretty good, though.

It sucks for a lot of things yet you can still "get through" a lot of games, with varying amounts of graphical inaccuracies, input lag and random poor performance.

There is a time where you can have a 100% accurate emulator but you will never have the CPU horsepower to play the games. 15 years ago you could have higan but you will never be able to play the games, so obviously back then something as horrible as zsnes was a necessity.
While people are figuring out a way to make the most accurate as possible emulator, speehacks are a necessary process along the line just to get things playable. It doesn't need to be either or, both are necessary in the process, and it's a slow fucking process.
