How come there are no arcade driving games anymore? It's nothing but realistic simulators nowadays.
>>
>arcade
>simulators
I was never into racing or any other sports vidya, and apparently there are different kinds of them.
What's the difference?
>>
>>321736964
You have games like Outrun 2006 which take liberties with physics and are all about being fast-paced and fun and then there are boring slugfests like Forza or whatever.

>>
>>321736964
even if youre not into racing or sports, the descriptions are pretty much self explanatory.
unless youre just fucking retarded.
>>
>>321736643
Because those games existed solely in the now-extinct "middle market" of games.

When I hear "arcade" I imagine something like Mario Kart or pic related.
But they don't really make those kind of games nowadays. They all seem like simulators to me.

But there are.
They're in arcades.
>>
>>321738280
This.
Maximum Tune would be better without the required Story mode grind but it's a really fun arcade racer.
>>
>>321737958
>They all seem like simulators to me.

because they are, which is why OP made this thread.
man, you are an idiot.
>>
>>321738280
It's not the 90s anymore grandpa.
>>
>>321736643
The current popular racing games aren't even realistic, they're just slow and boring to make it seem like they're realistic.
>>
>>321738502
I know, that's why it's great to live in an area with one of the few decent arcades left.
>>
>>321738369
I thought arcade was some sort of derogatory term elitist call any racing game that isn't super accurate.
For example I've heard NFS being called arcade. It honestly doesn't look like one to me.

to be fair 2015 has been a good year for racers that take themselves seriously, people are learning theres better options outside of forza
>>
>>321738630
Well it is. Sadly words don't always mean what you think that do :(
>>
>>321736643
What episode is that?
>>
Is Need for Speed not considered arcade racing anymore? I know that just came out. So did Fast Racing Neo. Neither of those I would consider simulation racers.

>>321738763
Is this ever coming to console?
>>
>>321738630
It's the same as calling call of duty a simulation, when its just a game that takes itself seriously all the while being incredibly easy to pick up.

are there any arcade games that accurately simulate what it's like to drive stick shift?

>>321740663
eh, I want to practice double clutching and all those tricks without fucking up my car 2bh.

plus, it would be fun to race against someone with actual driving skills, not just vidya skills.
>>
Didn't fast racing neo literally just come out within the last two weeks?
>>
>>321737597
>boring slugfests like Forza or whatever.

>>

So, what's wrong with Mario Kart?

Arcade driving is purview of non-racing games now. Mos GTA-clone games have races in them.
>>
>>321740263
Maximum Tune is literally an arcade game with stick
>>
>>321738630
>For example I've heard NFS being called arcade. It honestly doesn't look like one to me.
NFS is super arcadey. Hold gas and turn to win and usually you get refilling nitrous and an easy-drift handbrake button.

It's funny to think that the original PS1/PC NFS games were closer to being simulators than all of the mainline titles that came after (excluding the oddballs like Shift).
>>
>>321740908
>eh, I want to practice double clutching and all those tricks without fucking up my car 2bh.
Only way you'll probably be able to learn is to do it in reality. Even sims like AC and rFactor with a three-pedal setup won't properly replicate the feel of your own actual clutch and tranny.
>>
>>321741250
shift blows ass though.
>>
>>321741165
Maximum tune doesn't actually simulate shifting, it has no clutch, and you can put the shifter back into neutral after changing gear and it'll stay in that gear.
>>
>>321741386
And so do pretty much all the other modern NFS games.

Seeing a trend here?

God, why can't EA just let it fucking die already?
>>
>>321736643

I don't think anyone could compete with burnout

I tend to break them up into four categories.
>Simulation
Assetto Corsa, iRacing, Gran Turismo, Forza
>Arcade
Need for Speed, Burnout, Forza Horizon
>Kart
Mario Kart, Sonic All Stars
>Futuristic
Wipeout, F Zero, Fast Racing Neo

Obviously there's numerous series in each category but that's just the ones that come to mind. I'm sure people will green text GT and Forza being simulations at me, but whatever.
>>
>>321741386
I liked shift though...
>>
The middleground/simply an enthusiast market is permanently dead until either Steam gets new management or every giant dev's current direction dies out.

>Art styles that aren't DEEP or quirky and simple are dying outside handheld and mobile
>Passion projects from first party are nonexistent like Ape Escape and Parappa
>Marketing takes at least the same cost
>Most exceptions to the rule like Undertale and Shovel Knight are memetic nostalgia bombs that would be just pretty good by their own influences' standards, but are godlike to AAA shit.

How come there are no simulators? PCars (garbage) Asetto Corsa and Dirt Rally are all we got this year. Meanwhile arcade and simcade bullshit like Forza, GT, NFS, Drive Club, etc. run rampant.
>>
>>321744802
>hey guys we just made this simulator game that perfectly replicates driving a car

Also sims are boring, go drive a car

OP no one plays arcade outside asia. If you are in asia the only game you can play is Grindy Maximum Tune 5.
