Banished, up until mid-game, then its its frantically trying to stay balanced until everyone starves or freezes to death.

SimCity 4 are the best city building game for me, Anno 1404 comes close due to how comfy the setting and soundtrack are.
>>
>>321735338
the colonial mod is pretty great and adds loads more features and content

but i agree that it's kind of frustrating since one small tip of the scale can bring the whole thing crashing. all the more annoying since populations under 100 aren't sustainable long-term

False

Also the Colonial Charter mod gives some very nice economy and cosmetic enhancements (though entirely optional)

I don't know about the other games, but Caesar III had a big problem. For houses to evolve and stay evolved, they had to get various goods and services. To get those, they had to have the right workers walk past them. The problem is that you couldn't control the workers' routes. You could put a bathhouse right next to a bunch of houses, but they'd never get bath service because the worker always walked in the opposite direction. If houses went too long without getting their stuff, they'd de-evolve and you'd lose citizens. Your city could get completely fucked up through no fault of your own.

>>
>>321748420
I always get unemployed female vagrants shitting up my island with shacks because there aren't as many positions to fill as men, so I gotta build unnecessary schools or hospitals, but these are educated jobs, so I end up having to sack men from the builder jobs and filling the roles with women, but who fucking needs builders late game?

What can I fucking do, my man?

>>321748404
>Anno 2070 > Anno 1404

>>
>>321744439
That's what roadblocks are for.
Unlike in modern city builders, where you have to manage traffic load, in these you should avoid crossroads like the plague, since the direction the walkers choose is completely random.
>>
>>321748754

Roadblocks weren't in C3. I think. It's be a long time since I last played.
>>
>>321748585
Jail them and force them to work as slaves.

>>321748754

Yeah.

I loved Caesar III to begin with and was probably directly responsible for me being a history buff but god fucking dammit that walker mechanic sans roadblocks can go to hell

The Settlers 4
>>
>>321748420
is 5 any good? or is there really no point in playing it if you already play 4
>>
>>321748840
Yeah, it's pretty annoying even with roadblocks. In Pharaoh you can't avoid making crossroads in your living area, because entertainment buildings can only be built on crossroads or T-shaped roads.
>>
>>321742920
that picture reminds me of when I would lurk and read people's City Journals on Simtropolis in between finding good mods
>>
>>321748935
I personally liked 5 more because of the dynasties mechanic. I thought it brought a really interesting flavour to the series. This is kind of a hot topic on /v/ though and some prefer 4 due to reasons.
>>
>>321748935
I don't know why but they dumbed the game down and it offers less than previous games. It's not worth anyone's money.
>>
>>321749103
fuck, I'm gonna go to the site right now and read one, haven't been there in years
>>
>>321748935

Tropico 5 is a MASSIVE disappointment on all grounds except combat (Which is one aspect I like) and constitution.

Less buildings (most of them expensive DLC), timelines a shit, diplomacy is cool but seriously fucked up at times, new trading interface is really garbage... If it's 75% off you can try it, otherwise stay away.

Any recommendations for a newer comfy slow-paced RTS?
I don't want just to be buildings, I also want to be building armies and fight with other Nations but i can't find any game that fits this criteria.
>>
>>321749323

Yeah, then they fucked it up with Tropico 2.
>>
>>321742920

Still high tier but the community is slowly dying. Simpeg just died which has the best dockside mods.
>>
>>321749353
You mean like the total war games? I know it's not RTS but still you build armies and manage cities/expenses.

>>321748213

>>
>>321733979

>>
>>321733921

Tropico 4
>>
>>321749554
Not really like the Total War Games.

What I am looking for is something like Anno where you can spend countless hours in building your city but i also want the game to have the possibility to build armies and i'd like it to be a "newer" game as i have mostly played all of the older games like The Settlers that provide this kind of things that i want.
>>
>>321749725
>fucked up
It's stylized.
If you have problems enjoying vidya that deviate from reality just that little, I can only pity you.
>>
>>321749745

>>
>>321748840
>>321748825

>>
>>321735356

SimCity 4 is a micromanagement hell when compared to the new city building games, especially Cities skylines. (no idea why everyone praises cities skylines, it has literally no depth at all)

But Simcity 4 is a great game.
>>
>tfw no post-apocalyptic town management game where you build a town / raider camp and slowly take over and influence (though no direct control) nearby settlements and tribes while you decide which major faction you ally with, whether you wish to stay neutral or even try to build your own faction
>discovering all crazy old world secrets in a randomly generated patch of land with military bases, labs, old cities or towns to loot etc
>raiding, trading, farming, mining, heavy industry, caravan outpost, resort etc are all viable options for town direction
>visual style of town depends on start (raiders, remnants of earlier town, scavengers, tribals) but can be influenced later and by what resources you have available (why built mudhuts when you have sheet metal available)
>patrol the land, send exploration parties, build alliances
>governmental style can vary from corporation-controlled settlement to tribal council, direct democracy, dictatorship etc
>if you're the sole ruler you'll need to balance terror and benefits be they economical, safety etc
>if you're elected, you'll have to play the people's representatives against each other, plant your own supporters in government and try to give the people what they want to remain in power
>you will have to prepare for eventual disasters such as natural disasters, migrant or refugee waves, wars, epidemics, terrorism, mutants and such
>AI controlled factions may try to influence towards their religion or system of government and may try to subvert your authority
>>
>>321749546

>>
>>321750329
>no idea why everyone praises cities skylines
Because it's not a micromanagement hell. I dislike SC4 for that reason and prefer the earlier SimCities vastly more.
>>
>>321749775
I don't think such a game exists unless if Stronghold Crusader 2 is any good, I haven't played it but the original had a pretty good balance of city building and combat. Maybe try Black and White 1/2? Still, I would prefer something much slower paced almost to the point of a city builder but with armies, I just got Banished and thought how much better it would be if you could train small bands of men at arms to go out raiding or defending your town.

Line system, works for each one, works slightly worse for Pharaoh. Just keep everything in a single line with no intersections and services on both ends.

In Pharaoh, entertainment buildings mess it up, but it's not that bad, you can put them in the center with minimum amount of road.

One thing that is awesome about Pharaoh was the necessity of slums. None other actually forced you to do that. Zeus, Emperor, Ceasar, the houses in them can be easily maxed.

>>321751651
Zeus was great too, but I wouldn't say polished version. It was more like a simplified version. I really liked the endless housing improvements in Pharaoh. And I was disappointed in Zeus for that.

>>
>>321757925

Simcity 4 if you want an actual challenge. Cities Skylijnes if all you want to do is building great looking cities and managing a bit of traffic.

I like both.

Simcity 4 has a lot of depth, you are required to control the budgets, control taxes and prevent the pollution of your residential areas,...

Cities Skylines looks pretty, you have lots of freedom, the maps are fucking huge (225km^2 with a mod) and it has better traffic management. But going bankrupt is nearly impossible and all you have to do to make your citizens happy is spam schools, parks, fire stations,... and the houses will level up.
>>
>>321756409
You sure it's not age of empires: the conquerers or aoe 2hd as the remake version?

>>321735841
The one thing I really hate about Banished is that people magically stop fucking and shitting out kids if there aren't houses for them to live in.

I mean, I don't want to have to constantly build houses to match an exponentially growing population, but there has to be a more creative solution to that issue.
