I spent some time trying to understand him when he was first shilling this idea, but I've mostly forgotten it. Basically I came to the understanding that he doesn't understand what multiplication actually means within math.
So like if you take a 1 and a 1, then multiply them together, it's impossible for the result to be merely 1 because that means the second 1 doesn't exist. He basically just doesn't grasp that 1*1 is actually just a formula for "one instance of the number 1."
It's like he's thinking physically, as if he played the "How many apples do I have left game?" and got absolutely bamboozled when he tried to multiply 1 apple by 1 apple and still had 2 apples left.
