Your average person doesn't want or doesn't know how to use a PC for games. They'd rather buy a console and play all of their games on it. Even if said games are available on other platforms. They also want to play with their friends online so if someone hasn't bought a current gen console yet they'll most likely buy whichever console most of their friends have. That console happens to be the PS4 this gen. Last gen it was the 360. They don't care about exclusives.

what the response to this is usually "but those dont count, I can play most of those on steam too". what you need to learn is that people dont want to play downloadable games on a desktop, which is a more costly way of playing these games as well even if you learn the copious amounts of info that goes into buying the parts (let alone putting them together and troubleshooting). And obviously no one wants to spend the money to buy a gaming pc/laptop outright. thats just silly.
console gaming has fewer options and lower specs, but it saves money/time, and is far more readily available. I dont know why I felt like making an actual post as if I were in a real conversation but in case any of you havent heard this perspective here it is. As someone who lives in a world full of "normies", a ton of people dont even know steam exists or that windows can play actual video games. that can actually be moreso chalked down to the consumer ignorance that irritates you so much though.
