I remember seeing a few threads about a similar game being made by one guy a couple years ago. He had videos where he'd show off and narrate features. I can't remember what it was called though.

I can rule out Castle Story based on what I've seen. If it helps, he had a video showing off a unit type you could control manually from a first-person perspective, which he showed off by climbing to the highest point in a complex fortress structure he had built.

I've had my eye on it too but don't go for it yet. Pirate it if you must.
If you want something akin to StoneHearth try Towns. It's like Dorf Fort lite lite lite lite. Pretty fun for awhile. You make your little town and you can send people into dungeons, or have heroes visit your town and go into dungeons for you. It's enjoyable and not too hard to learn.

Looks like a dumb downed Dorf Fort meets Trove/Cube World.
I like the way the villagers look. They're cute and remind me of Bomberman.
In fact, the overall style of the game is fairly appealing.

It was abandoned but it's in a decent state as is. It can be a bit glitchy but it's generally fine. I enjoyed my time with it quite a bit, it was nice and relaxing. I definitely recommend it if you're not looking for something insanely deep, but still fun.
I've heard really good things about Gnomoria but never tried it, maybe I should.

i bought it on sale. it's comfy as fuck, but is extremely buggy. every time i play it something bugs out, whether it's my villagers stuck in walls or the floor, or designing buildings bugs out. i would say wait until it gets more updates and bug fixes.
