It really wasn't. Not only was the price fucked up, but at launch it had no games besides Resistance. Multiplats almost always ran like shit on it because it was too hard to develop for. Online play was awful and the interface was put to shame by the 360. It got better late in the lifespan but multiplats were always garbage and online never improved.

I really liked the Slim model. It was a great machine and I still play it regularly. It's a great design and holds up well. I have no idea why they abandoned it for that 3rd design with the sliding door for the games. It looks and feels so much cheaper and more like one of those fake Polystation chinese "game" machines with all the bootleg NES games.
I'm glad they went back to the PS3 slims aesthetics for the PS4. It's my favorite console I have. It has a low profile and seems to be easier to dev for and more powerful than Xbox 1. My Xbox 1 just collects dust pretty much. The only game I really like on it is Titanfall. Not to mention that horrible user interface. They tried to fix it recently and sure load times are better when switching pages but it's still a complicated mess. PS4 also took a step back in UI though it's better than one. I liked 3's row of items with the drop down column for selection. PS4 is just one long row. Still leaps and bounds better than Xbox 1, I just think 3 did it right.

the problem with the PS3 was it tried to be too cutting edge and advanced for a console. The cell processor sounded great on paper but all it did was make it hard to dev for and next to impossible to port to. Then there was the bluray which upped the price to "just too expensive for a console".
It took a few years and a new iteration of the system for things to finally work out. Devs started to understand it and it finally was getting comparable ports, and the first party games were slightly better looking than xbox360s.
I will say they knew what they were doing when it came to bluray though. Not only was it a good marketing ploy to get people to buy it by setting it just a few dollars more than a stand alone player but they realized that games were getting bigger and dvds were going to be outdated before the generation was finished.
it's too bad neither microsoft or sony saw digital being the main platform for this generation and didn't include larger storage space on either system.

The problems with the PS3 were its shitty quirks, exception-as-rule architecture design, buggy x86 SDK, and lack of documentation.
What you see at the end of a console's lifespan is not the opening of its potential, but the absolute maximum of it.
That's as far as it can be pushed, and devs are exploiting every bit of that garbage machine and building spaghetti code around it just to achieve a paltry 20fps at the best of times.
