You work hard to get a base going, while two thirds of the people quit because they cant play anything that isnt LoL or an FPS, then work even harder to get a basic economy working, then half the remaining and capable people in your village quit and everything becomes a chore with your small numbers, and then a bunch of russians called newplayername124815413 invade from the nearby river and slaughter you all, and then everyone quits, vowing never to play the game again.
I speak from thrice the experience, all the /v/ settlements ended up like that.

Russians start a settlement, then they see you claimed land near, and they make an outpost between theirs and your base.
After that they make alt characters, work from the outpost and raid you until you quit.
After that they expand at will.
And note, by "russians" I mean every single player who isnt from the USA. They can be polish or turkish for all I know.
