For the sprite to be that big you'd have to be playing in a movie theatre or be mashing your face into your screen. Left looks fucking fine, and a lot of people who actually gave a fuck about it kept their CRTs anyway.

But this one piece of art that's not even art you see during actual gameplay that was designed for CRT monitors means CRT is better for every game ever made.
>>
I played games on CRT TVs and computer monitors through the console wars and my vision worsened by several magnitudes yearly. As soon as we trashed the CRTs for LCDs, my vision stopped getting worse and now the next generation of my family doesn't even need glasses .

They designed them for CRT monitors in mind because those were the most common monitors. They weren't making use of the CRT display, they were just trying their best to make games not look like shit on those monitors. This shit >>321650540 looks well because the developers actually made use of the CRT display to make something look good on it, meanwhile, every other developer just cared about making the game not look like shit. >>321651879
Pretty necessary for old console games. LCDs have varying degrees of input lag, so if you ever want anything with high precision input-wise, CRTs are always the best option. Not to mention, a lot of graphical tricks were used back then with CRTs in mind, so typically old games will look worse on a non-crt due to the TV not functioning in the same manner and supporting the sort of odd workarounds CRTs had.
>>
That's true.
Retro games on emulators don't simply look right, they look even better than their original counterpart.
I am glad we got rid of that trashy analogue display shit and improved ourselves.

no, what you wanted is a high quality trinitron crt. playing games on an old crt just because it is a crt means you are playing with massively reduced visual quality and telling yourself it is good.

>>321652942

this whole shit is an obsession with making things look worse (to emulate a period of time you weren't around for) and telling yourself it looks better.

A game like turrican with technical designs and vivid colors is going to look better with the video output 1:1 pixel to pixel normally.

the effect the black lines have on the image is really interesting. it's actually an objective difference as well, not something that is just up to taste.

the brain does some cognitive processing to all images you see. one of the big functions of the brain is basically trying to decude information where there isnt any. the primary purpose of this is to hide the white spot in your view (which is where the nerve connecting your eyes to the brain is - you can't see anything there, but you don't actually ever 'see' the dot when looking around because the brain interpolates data into that spot). but it also results in images like this looking way different because your brain interpolates image data in between the black lines, because the interruption is unnatural to your eyes.

No

you probably just had a shitty TV that had massive amounts of blur or something

the best CRTs were actually usually the ones that had the most defined lines

most CRT shaders are based on TVs like Sony Trinitrons because they're great looking and not super hard to find either also they have flat screens like a modern TV

With my CRT it seems to depend on the resolution of the console. I have one with component which I use for PS2, and you can't see any scan lines at all. With the NES though, there's nice, thick ones that really define the image.
>>
>>321659573
5th (PS1, N64) gen and up, and especially 6th gen onward usually doesn't care what TV you use just make sure you connect the console to the TV via Component, RGB, or if you're rich enough a HDMI via scaler.

How come these threads rarely point out shit CRTs actually did well? Like in Sonic 1 for example, the waterfalls in Green Hill Zone and the shield have pixels spaced 1 apart to create an illusion of transparency through the CRT blending the pixel colors. The top of the water in Labyrinth Zone that flashes and Sonic's rolling animation have a similar effect because of how CRTs work. I don't know the "how" but that's at least the "why"

Of course this is just another excuse to argue. That's why.

CRT scanlining does nothing for Sprites in games, it just makes them look even more broken, the only upside is true color.

CRTs however ARE good for N64/PS/Saturn

PS2 and GC look okay on LCD, not great, but bearable N64 and PS looks downright horrible and make you dizzy.
>>
>>321649738

>>321660904
I'm not sure filters can recreate everything CRTs did, like the transparent water produced by flickering the sprite. Then again I haven't played the 3DS version

One of Nvidia's more prominent engineers supports CRT shaders. In fact, he made one of the more popular ones, crt-lottes. How does that make you feel?
>>
>>321661208

not really true at all

scanlines add negative space which rounds and separates and essentially outlines the pixels allowing for a more coherent image especially when viewed from a slight distance
its a similar effect to something like a stained glass window

I played on crt screens until like 2012 because my family was poor. CRT display perception.png

>>321661706

I fundamentally disagree with this claim.

The claim is made with a digital camera pointed an inch or two away from the screen.
Your human eye at the same distance would see something different, our eyes cannot even focus on things that close to our vision.
The subpixels would not even be visible to the human eye when viewed at a normal distance, remembering that arcade displays will output at a 1x resolution, unlike modern emulators which will upscale by some means to fit the display full screen.

Sometimes that upscaling is nearest neighbour, which preserves the hard edges of each pixel.
Sometimes that upscaling is bilinear or bicubic, which attempts to fill in the information between each pixel based on the surrounding pixels.
Or sometimes, that updating is a displeasing filter the awkwardly redraws everything which causes corners and curves to lose definition.

Look at your NES carts. Piled ontop of the others? spines facing inwards instead of out? You extended your SNES to two shelves, why not NES?
