Burnside would be 32 years old in RE6. He couldn't possibly fill the "young mercenary" role. Jake is 21. Leon is 36. Chris is about 41. The Resident Evil cast are getting old. Barry Burton is 53. Leon and Chris are reaching the point where their insane combat skills only have a few years left, practically speaking. That's kinda why it makes sense for Barry to be plodding around in Revelations 2 instead of diving backwards and performing sophisticated hand to hand combat. RE6 needed to introduce a young male character with ties to the existing cast who can be used to replace Chris or one of the others in future titles. Also, he fills a sort of "for people who liked God Hand" niche.

As someone who actually did play it to the end re6 is utter boring, the only good but that showed promise was the very beginning of Leon's campaign, great atmosphere coupled with the fluid John woo controls/gameplay was great
The other campaigns were repetitive shit, zombies with guns are not fun, the uroboros shits are not fun and the coop was bland.
Shame really, if they stuck to a traditional zombies formula throughout and maybe had some nostalgic nods to the classics (like having a raccoon city past scene) that would have been fun as fuck with the gameplay style

I never said he had to. The older characters in the series seem to be just as physically capable as the younger ones.
Though I do get the younger attitude they wanted to add in the game through Jake, it did not have to be done as it was.

Switch to hand-to-hand mode. Hold down aim. Select enemy by aiming at them while holding down attack. Release attack, and Jake will sprint towards them. While in this state, you can move side to side, backflip to move backwards, and perform various tricks. So long as you don't release the aim button, Jake will keep "locked" on that enemy and moving towards them. It's very easy to dodge side to side to avoid gunfire while in this state.
Pressing aim and attack at the same time will make Jake uppercut, which is very useful when cornered. But usually holding aim and tapping attack to do normal 3-combo punches is best.
