Never tried gale of darkness (XD), but I remember really enjoying Colosseum. Definitely not your typical pokemon game given the lack of wild catching and only trainer battles, but it was great for what it was.

colloseum was the risk
this game reused so many assets it was likely the recoup of investments to try and make a profit. It even returned to the tone and style of the main series, with a younger protagonist, sunnier setting, and more goofy side characters
