Gold becomes worthless pretty quick. What you want are the upgrade items, which vary from weapon to weapon.
For example, to upgrade the bucket helm, you need ore, then like dragon scales or some shit, then three buckets.

You get a "beloved" by giving an NPC gifts, completing quests for them or overall just being nice to them. (Conversely, they'll like you less if you punch them, throw them down a flight of stairs, unsheathe weapons in front of them, etc. Useful for avoid the NPCs you interact with often, but would rather not have sex with.)
Selene is a decent choice, though she'll move in with you anyway if you complete her quest chain, so it's generally better to pick someone else. (Jewslut is a solid option, since she has a store and this makes her easily available. Not-Casca will disappear entirely if you don't pick her.)

Hard mode is actually pretty balanced post 60 ish. It's kind of like nightmare in diablo 1 & 2 - you can't really survive it right away but they won't stop you from trying.
If you're really really good at blocking as a fighter you can run it early. It also makes skills like broad slash and things with I-frames insanely useful. Having played a full on from start to finish hard mode game it's not impossible, but you need to pay the fuck attention to what you're doing and what your pawns are capable of for at least the first 50 or so levels.

Actually I had a much easier time with a warrior to seventy mystic knight build to 100 and then solid assassin after that. My stamina was shit for the first 30 levels into the hundreds but I had enough restoratives it didn't matter. It was nice being able to take a hit in the shit fest that is combat with those fucking Garms on hard mode.

It really doesn't matter, stat growths are very low for levels 1-10 overall. But consider Strider since it gives you a free rusted bow, that will come in handy late-game.
For main pawn, I tend to go the directly opposite of what I play, so sorc for assassin. (Sorc has better stat growths than mage, let other suckers level their pawn as mage and hire them from the rift instead for healing.)

Point is that they're all basic classes, which means very averagely distributed stat growths. We're talking about a total difference at like 20 points in attack here, IF you go for the completely reverse end of the spectrum of what you plan to play as primarily.

As you can see from the link above, choosing strider instead of fighter results in:
- 60 less HP
- 50 more stamina
- 10 less physical attack
- 10 more magic attack
Keep in mind that magic attack also benefits physical classes when you use enchanted weapons, and that these numbers will be several thousands by end-game. That's why I think Strider is best, so you don't have to search for that one dude that sells the rusted bow later on.

You'll often down monsters more quickly because you concentrate all the damage on yourself, and you actually hit the weak spots. This makes a huge difference.
Of course, not really advisable to do against living armors and hellhounds, etc.

The treasures in BBI sell for a shitload, but even before then there are some dungeons if you repeat them you get good gear that also sell for a lot for the main game portion, I was being a hoarder but then I realized I needed moeny and just started selling my duplicates and made like 2 million in the main game, BBI you'll get like 20+ mil.

You can beat the dragon from like level 40 (or even earlier), but BBI is hard till you're around 60. By 80, you'll probably be on BBI+, and the final boss in the game is manageable at level 100. The game goes up to 200, but after 100, the stat growths lower off and you're more in it for trying to get specific armor pieces/weapons. At level 200, you can basically solo anything no matter how you built your character. I remember doing the final boss as sorc on a character that had been assassin all since level 10.
Finally, there's the Ur-Dragon, who is a sort of communal boss that multiple people have to whittle at to kill, each in their separate instance. His loot is mostly made redundant by BBI, but he grows stronger for each iteration, which means eventually only high-level characters will make a dent in his HP. I can't even imagine how strong he is on PS3 at this point. (He'll probably be laughably weak the first week on PC though.)
