Nibelheim is a town that is using the German word Nibelheim which literally means Cloud Home, that comes from the Norse Niflheim, which mean Mist Home
Their hometown Nibelheim uses German architecture on the houses, Cloud's mothers name is stated to be Claudia Strauss

Originally "Tifa" and Sephiroth were siblings, however the Tifa that was originally being written was actually the character we now know as Aeris
They created a new design for "Tifa" which is the design of Aeris and they renamed her into Aeris, and then used the old design for Tifa and the name Tifa and rolled that into a new character who was Cloud's childhood friend
Then they dropped the whole sibling thing, but according to Nomura a remnant of that intention is still seen on Sephiroth's and Aeris's hairstyle, the bangs on their hair is the same style.
