A very good game with a lot of interesting things to talk about in regards to morality in video games, good writing, good gameplay mechanics, excellent soundtrack and awful graphics aside from some good battle sprites.
I enjoyed it as a 9-10/10 when it came out and I still greatly enjoy it but the fanbase turned toxic like pulling the pin on a nerve gas grenade (aka super dang quick). Don't let others dictate your enjoyment of the game

The GAME itself never punishes you for levelling up unless you grind, but the characters and story react in the way a logical person would if their friends were murdered.

Just play it. I went in after months of /v/ shitting on it or praising it and they are both right.
On one side, it really has some poor jokes, puzzles are too easy, the last bossfight is just an interactive cutscene (however really well done) and it has one character that had me wanting to punch my screen. Characters are nice and lovely but you don't really get attached to them. Or at least I didn't really fall so much for any of them like people on the internet seem to do
One you get past that, it really has the best world building and storytelling I've seen in years. It's deep enough as to not be a kid's game, but simple and fun enough as to not bore the player to death in an andless attempt to sound cool and original. Game is really short but you can find a lot of cool things each time you play through it. Bullet hell mechanichs are implemented in a fun way. Despite it already being a shit meme that the internet cancer uses , the 4th wall breaking in this game is really good and created a lot of 10/10 moments for me.
Play it anon. It's 3-4 hours long a playthrough. If you started playing it by the time you made this thread, you'd already be 65% through
