Well it's like a free for all between tribes in those pvp servers but you can respawn after you die.

There is actually a hardcore mode that resets the player's level if that suits you.
Beware of the grind. 90% of the game you grind items, stats or try to farm stupid animals.
It's buggy like Rust and all the other games in that genre.
In terms of PvP you can attack anyone and you can destroy people's shit if you got enough people on your tribe to fuck them over with but performance is extremely awful - don't expect to get more than 30fps at decent graphics settings with high-end cards.
It's also a timezone and numbers game - if you get attacked while everyone is asleep it's guaraneteed to end in losing a lof of valuable shit. Bad design all in all and more of a meme game from people who never played anything but awful survival games to begin with.

That's actually what drove me away from ever touching a pvp server. I don't mind people killing and stealing from each other by itself, but when the game is designed to be grindy as well that's just fucking stupid.
Hey it's going to take you 8 hours of solid play to get a few dinos and building up a decent base, but it's only going to take 1 chucklehead 20 min to destroy it all. Have fun!

Really they just need a setting that lowers the amount of resources required period. I've played on a few of those and yeah it's easier, but you're still making 20 trips back and forth with a pack mule. Wouldn't be as bad if walls were a little taller so single floored buildings didn't feel claustrophobic.
Although maybe the sloped roofs fixed this, I haven't played since just before they came out.

This is without a doubt what ruins Ark. It just takes way too fucking long to build anything. In Rust, as shit as it is, you can start building a home base fairly quickly. Setting up a spawn point in Ark takes so long that you just want to quit playing instead.
