Every party is viable, and it pays to get everyone leveled and learn all their magic.If you want the true meta, just use Falcon Hit as soon as you get it all the way through to the end of the game.

A fantastic adventure, the pinnacle of 16-bit RPG's and among the best RPG's of all time, period.
There are no bad parties. That's one of the highlights of the game, everyone is useful and valuable.

you'll be stuck with Crono for most of the game

I'm starting to think you haven't played the game or at least beaten it yet. Ayla has the best physical damage in the game, as well as Falcon Hit and some godly triple techs. Let's also not forget getting 9999 damage on literally anything with iron fist crits.

You're in for a light hearted and occasionally somber adventure with a fun and varied cast, and one of the most enjoyable timed turn based battle systems Square has developed.
More than most other games, Chrono Trigger is a fine candidate for being THE representative JRPG. Not perfect or the best, but definitely an icon.
