From Vanilla WoW to Cata I did this with a friend, we'd always roll tonk healer and irritate groups to no end. It's very efficient too, as he knew how I played, and vice versa. Double Paladin Scarlet Monastery runs using 2H weapons were a particular highlight, the whole instance was one pull, boss to boss to boss.

For a long time, rogue abilities weren't even gear dependent though. I know people who'd run around with a grey dagger and nothing else and fight people.
I would say hybrids probably had it the worst in vanilla. Healing specializations suck for doing solo content when you're leveling up, and any time you find a group, you're expected to heal. Most of the time, groups would outright refuse entry to any warrior who didn't want to tank, or any healing capable class that didn't want to heal. And then on top of getting stuck playing your class how others want you to, you have no rights to the loot at the end for the specialization you want to play because pure DPS classes (Rightfully so) need it for themselves, and gear for them for the most part for them overlaps so they generally need only one set of gear and maybe a few different weapons if they want to switch between daggers and maces and all that, instead of three different sets for paladins/druids and two different sets for warriors and shamans.
On top of that, Kalgan, the class designer at the time, specifically made hybrid classes weaker in all roles than any pure class which he admitted to on the forums in a Q&A, leading to their subpar abilities in raids (Which usually favored very specialized roles rather thank jack of all trades) and their only inclusion being that they were buffbots.

I liked it best when the three tanks had their niches.
Warriors had high mitigation, high single target threat, and generally were the tank of choice against raid bosses. Feral druids had a fuckton of health to compensate for eating crushing blows, but this made them very good against spell damage and other sources that couldn't crush, along with being very powerful in heroics. Paladins had massive sustained threat generation in an AoE, but were the squishiest of tanks for mitigating large damage spikes, preforming the best against masses of weaker enemies.

I'd rather the game just be designed so that there's time's where all out DPS is what you need and times where shit hits the fan and having someone who can stop bashing on targets to drop heals is viable too. I loved playing a Paladin in Stratholme because one minute I could be smacking some ghouls around, dropping heals on a DPS who aggro'd something the next, and taunting mobs off the healer after. None of those could I do as well as someone specialized in it, but I could preform the role if I had to.
And then BC came along, and in heroics, mobs hit non-tanks so hard that it'd one shot them. DPS classes got further buffs leaving hybrids behind. Itemization on gear became very evenly cut so that paladins no longer got bonus intellect or spellpower on gear compared to a warrior's strength/stamina even though they absolutely required multiple stats to function.

Speaking of Leather, anyone else think Demon Hunter should have been a Cloth class? They explicitly wear as little and as light as possible to maximize their agility, which leather really isn't in both categories. Since they start in the expansion where we get personal loot from enemies and bosses and Blizzard is continuing it in Legion they could get their own Agility-specced Cloth armors easily.

that's because those DPS specs weren't viable at all back then.
Paladins couldn't tank or heal because strength plate did piss all for mana regen, and int plate did nothing for DPS/Threat.
Enh shammys could get by if they managed to go 2h early, but since there were so few weapons that fit the bill while leveling it was gimping yourself to level as ehn. Elemental always was garbage because blizzard had no fucking clue about proper spec itemization back then (i mean they still don't but it was even worse back then)
and druids were only good as casters, or off tanking for dungeon grinds as feral. If you were a pure DPS cat you were playing the class wrong, and Boomkin only had like 3 spells total, but they were brought along because of how well they could tank hits while casting (because of that stupid 10% stam from moonkin form)

Warlocks are great for both leveling and for their utility to summon and shit. Bad warlocks will fear mobs into other mobs, better warlocks will stand on the otherside and fear mobs back into stuff that had already been cleared.

You realize World of Roguecraft was only possible because Eviscerate dealt fixed damage?
Meaning that among players with shitty gear, rogues were kings, but they fell behind among players with top of the line gear.
But no, being completely unable to up your eviscerate damage was totally worth being able to kill retarded, undergeared shitters while naked.
A hunter, priest, or warlock could kill you by walking in a straight line spamming instant-cast abilities if you had no line of sight options to abuse. Your only hope was to get the drop on them and stunlock them, which before PvP trinkets existed was really only feasible for undead. Remember when fear/seduce had no diminishing returns? Nothing like being infinite-comboed by seduce>shadowbolt>seduce>shadowbolt. There was even a time when damage didn't increase fear's chance to break.
Warlocks were a bigger problem than rogues throughout most of vanilla desu.

except that back in vanilla, the top of the line gear WAS raid gear. There was no PVP Gear, no middle ground, and sure as fuck no ilvl or gearscore brackets.
so from patch 1.5 to 2.0ish everyone in BGs were in questing greens and dungeon blues. Very rarely you had someone in full T.5 or Dungeon 2, and even more rare were the people in T1 or T2.
Rogues absolutely stomped PvP at that time, mostly because eviscerate WAS fixed damage, and mostly because 99% of the players you were up against weren't able to outgear that fixed damage. The only two classes that could even put a dent into a rogue were warlocks (if they were able to get a fear off on time) or a warrior if they could close the gap or catch you before you could vanish in time.

Speak for yourself, my entire High Warlord grind group was queuing in T1/T2 mixes and we regularly got matched against enemy HWL grind groups queuing entirely in T1/T2 mixes. It was NEETs vs NEETs very regularly.
Yes when I happened to match with people in greens/blues I could two-shot people with ambush > backstab, but in the only matches I cared about, one wrong step and you were getting blown the fuck out by a Warrior, Hunter, or Warlock. It was nearly impossible to outplay a good frost mage, too, but genuinely skilled frost mages were rare.

Dude, one of my best friends pretended to be a girl all throughout vanilla and it was fucking hilarious.
He managed to convince this one guy pretty bad. Turned him into his manslave. This guy was on the game very day just farming and giving all the gold he made to my friend. Would run him through instances while he was leveling up, etc.
My friend had made up this entire persona (appearance, hobbies, where "she" lived, etc) for the girl he was playing and then one day the guy told him he was buying a bus ticket to go see "her".
My friend did the only reasonable thing he could think of and just stopped playing WoW. Thinking back on it, it was such a dick move and I kind of feel sorry for that other guy, but back then it was one of the most hilarious things that ever happened while playing that game.
