Who here /his/ + /v/?

What are some of your favorite historical based or history influenced games, /v/?

Let's list some games/series.

>Sid Meier's: Civilization
>Age of Empires/Mythologies
>Victoria
>Europa Universalis
>Total War
>Mount and Blade/Napoleonic Wars
>Expeditions: Conquistadors
>Tropico(?)
>Chivalry(?)
>Assassin's Creed
>Hearts of Iron
>Crusader Kings
>Stronghold

What are some of your favorites?
>>
I've been playing Total War as the Parthians creating a wall of fortifications around what will be Mecca to stop Islam right in its tracks with 1000 arrows.

Right now I'm just starting to get the hang of strategy games. I'm a long time ancient warfare buff but only now will my brain calm down and accept the Crusader Kings interface. Its good, whole new world of games to explore any suggestions?
>>
I've played hundreds of hours of line battles in Napoleonic Wars for M&B. I have no idea why.

Assassin's Creed

Pretty much every Paradox game is my shit. I've recently started an EU4 VEF game as the Republic of Venice. So far I took over the entire Adriatic, as well as all of Greece (including Greek-majority Asia Minor areas) and most of northern Italy. Reformed the Roman Republic. Feels good.
>>
>>321386428
EU IV is as much of a /his/ game as Mortal Kombat is a side scroller action game
>>
>>321386532
That's why I'm playing VEF, which aims to drastically increase the historical plausibility of the game.
>>
Can anyone give me a quick crash course on which grand stat is the best/are the best?

Me and a mate are about to start playing CKII and it seems like a pretty good start.
>>
>>321386662
Vicky 2 is the best Grand Strat out there
perfect balance between autism, historical plausability and gameplay
sure there are more indepth and realistic Grand Strats but Vicky 2 really hits the nail on the head
>>
>>321386662
CK2 is basically Pdox's easymode game. It doesn't take too much strategizing or skill to get into and it's not THAT rewarding.

Paradox games get progressively more complex the more 'recent' you go - EU is more complex than CK, Vic is more complex than EU, and HOI/DH are practically simulators.

Other than that, there all kinda different genres:
-CK2 is a GSG with RPG elements
-EU4 is a GSG with 4X elements
-Vic2 is a GSG with politsim elements
-HOI/DH is a GSG with milsim elements

Personally I rank them like this:
EU4>DH>Vic2>CK2>HOI3
But it really is just preference. None of them are unanimously better than the others. They all have their followings, too.

Fuck you Wu
>>
>>321386941
CK is definetely more complex than EU friend
CK leaves alot for strategizing and plotting, EU's strategy is: Paint the map harder than others

>>321387545
Factually wrong, but I'm sure you'll trick somebody.
>>
>>321387545
Nah CK2 just goes like this
Fab claims->Attack->Pick the one diplomatic option you have after you win a war->Repeat
Marry offspring based on stats clearly listed on potential spouse page->Wait a generation->Repeat

that's literally it there's nothing else to do in CK2 that actually means anything.

EU4 has an actual trade system that can destroy your enemies if you use it properly, a diplomatic system that consists of more than an overglorified "Win/Draw/Lose" button, and a map five times the size.
>>
>>321387580
then show me why EU i more complex than CK
>>
>>321387679
Twenty expansions and weekly updates?
>>
Are all the dlc in paradox games necessary like they're are on civ 5? Or can I play the base games without any dlc or expansions?
>>
>>321387729
20 "expansions"
>>
>>321387679
>CK2 has no analog to development
>CK2 has no analog to peace treaties
>or exploration
>or colonization
>or trade
>or diplomatic relations (vassals/marches/clients/etc.)
>or ideas
>or religious flavor (no, 'muslims get their shit fucked up every century' doesn't count as religious flavor in the same level as the Papacy or Fervor)
>everything in ck2 comes down to a set of five stats (meanwhile, there's hundreds of individual modifiers in EU4)
>can't play 3/4ths of the map without DLC
>even with all the DLC still can't play as some of the coolest nations
>literally no downsides to expanding forever
>literally nothing to do once you expand
>>
>>321387876
you can buy a legit copy of most paradox games and then just pirate the dlc and it works fine
>>
>>321387876
Most of CK2 is unplayable without the DLC (and I mean that literally, you actually can't play on most of the map without owning various DLC).

HOI3 and Vicky2 are metaphorically unplayable without the DLC. Everything else is pretty okay.
>>
>>321388103

Not the anon you were arguing with.
So is... Is Crusader Kings II a good game for medieval fans that aren't ecperienced with GSG? Or what would be a better paradox game to start with
>>
>>321388597
CK2 is a good crash course in GSGing if you have literally no experience with strategy games. Kinda like how BF is the best FPS ever if it's the only one you ever play.

If you're a GOT fan you'll like CK2. If you're an RPG fan you probably will. If not, you might as well just start with EU4, which is infinitely more complex than CK2 but not that much more difficult.

I'm on the fence with Expeditions. How much of it is character interaction focused?
I want to do diplomacy and talk with a range of interesting characters and not just move units on the battlefield all of the time.

It's not so much based around large scale gameplay. Think of it as a turnbased, oregon trail, except based on the Spanish expeditions.

You move your piece (little guy on a horse) and explore the land using moves, when you run out of moves you have to sleep for the night and assign certain people in your party tasks like night hunting, night watch, healing the sick/injured, defending the supplies, exploring for materials etc. The battles take place only when [a] its part of the story/quest [b] you are ambushed or run into a group of enemies.

Its a pretty fun game, in my personal opinion. Theres a a few back and forth movement quests, but you can choose the quests you wish to fulfill.

Each character has distinct traits and skills and emotions that affect the plot line depending on what you choose and if they decided to emit that trait.

Such as finding a native american tribe, and lets say you YOURSELF the player are friendly to them, you might have racist party members that lose morale because you decided to be friendly to them, they could mistrust you and possibly steal in the night from your supply or do something else like refuse to help you.

Theres no way to predict what will happen next much like The Oregon Trail
>>
>>321389289
Oh, and I would like to add that you though you are not 100% assured to avoid all battles, you can do your very best to avoid conflicts by other means. By negotiation, offering supplies/gold, sneaking by enemies, etc etc depeding on the certain event that is occuring that youre trying to avoid.
>>
>>321388727
Probably roll with that then. I'm fine with battles and RTS its this faction management that I'm struggling with. EU4 looks a lot like panzer though so I'vegot that ffamiliarity already

Yeah boy! Crusader Kings 2 is my jam. Currently also playing through the Charlemagne campaign of Total War: Attila.

Really looking forward to Kingdom Come: Deliverance

AoE 2 is great, especially the little history blurbs.
Red Orchestra 2 represents WWII weapons fairly decently and is very brutal.
>>321392473
Fire and Sword has guns. It takes place in that weird period of history where gunpowder and melee weapons coexisted but armor, horses, and bows were still viable.
>>
>>321384964
Horse archers are super OP in total war if you don't auto complete.

Stack shitloads of them in your army and then run circles around your enemy until they've either routed or been thinned out enough that you can smash them to pieces with your reserve forces.

Eu4 is a nice balance between autism and a ma painting game
>Trade + Diplo + Mana
These things give it a bit of depth that i feel makes each playthrough unique

VK2 is the mechanically better game, but it is just so fucking samey - no country feels different

100vs100 Cav usually ends up with the server desyncing massively, so all of your swings phase through enemies.

Yes that's wrong. EU3 is just a barebones version of EU4 that has Vic2's graphics. EU4 is better in more or less every way.

>I wish more people played.
I know Id like to see more people play, but ai have to admit the servers are always buzzing with people
Though I am kinda sad when I see most often the only servers with 100/100 people are the 2 huge humanVSbots servers and the Tropical Island Deathmatch that gets boring pretty quickly
>>
>>321394067
EU4 is map painting only. I don't see how it has anything else going for it.
>>321394719
EU3 is an older and slightly more complex version of EU4 with a better dynamic trade node system and worse warring because of cascading alliances.

I've been playing Assassins Creed Syndicate a lot recently and the setting is amazing.
