I kind of wish there was an RPG that was just mainly focused on a big city that had a ton of unique characters that would react to your actions and interfere with each other. Like, if you kill one person that doesn't only affect the people immediately involved with him, but has cascading effects that will change the plans of other characters as well.
Probably too difficult to make, but a man can dream.

Love how if you go through Liberty Island and Battery Park in two different ways (ex. go in guns blazing killing everyone in one and minimal kills in the other) Paul will comment on that when you reach Hell's Kitchen. He'll be like bruh chill with the killing like you did at Battery Park do shit like Liberty where you were calmer and didn't go on a killing spree.

Probably the only way you could do it would be to make a bunch of different systems for each facet of society that you want to emulate, throw a bunch of NPC's in there and hope that everything works. If you somehow kill all the brickmakers in the city you don't want people repairing buildings out of cheese, or something

Not just focused on one big city, but like I said >>321354759 Deus Ex has people reacting in all sorts of ways.
>>
>>321354859
I think the main thing it would come down to is how detailed you wanted to get with it.

Is it just going to be an NPC saying one line of dialogue about it, or would it completely change their entire dialogue?
>>
>>321354865
>Deus Ex has people reacting in all sorts of ways
yeah for like the first 2 hours then it completely stops noticing anything you do
>>
>>321354996
I think ideally it would change their actions and their dialogue depending on what happened. Maybe a group is planning to assassinate an important person, and the assassin gets murdered by you. Now they have to either get another assassin, or try another plan. Something like that would be ridiculously complex to program in the normal way, but I can't help but think about it after playing through games like Skyrim where NPC's are monolithic entities that don't react to what you do, and games like Pathologic which has a interesting storyline and a huge number of characters which give the illusion of them acting like independent entities.

You can simulate that pretty easily with event listeners.
>guy1 sends "I'm dead" global message
>listeners of guy1 collect message and apply corresponding results

It's kind of inefficient, but it fits the concept.

If you want unique results for every interaction, that would require a lot of effort in data modeling and implementation, and I mean -a lot- of work, and it's not even the fun / innovative work. It's the grindy, not-so-fun work. there's so little to gain by doing it, too.
It wouldn't even be interesting since you'd eventually run out of those unique results. Too much to do for a novelty.

I want this as well but like you said it sounds like a fucking pain in the ass to program and I don't even have any knowledge on that shit. I was hoping someone would achieve it by making ir completely text based with turn based combat, NSEW navigation and maybe some static pictures if they want to get fancy but even then it might be too hard.

I want a game that just drops you in the world where you character is just born and you can make your own story by going on big main questlines like trying to become king, getting revenge on a faction that takes out one of your companions during a random adventure or trying to steal some valuable treasure if you choose to become a master theif. A game where you can craft your own story as you play. Too hard?

Older CRPGs often did something close to that, since they're based on PnP adventure games.
You know, actual role-playing games that encouraged DMs to develop worlds and inhabitants for players to interact with, rather than string together a sequence of events that lead to some predetermined end.

Try Darklands.

>emergent story-telling is hard to do (in video games)
Try impossible.
Only Dwarf Fortress comes close, and even then, you'll find obvious patterns after a few sessions.

Extrapolation via imagination doesn't cut it, either.
Narrative in emergent storytelling is supposed to be created by a game master (ie: the game), not the player.
Otherwise, the player becomes the narrator, and that's just awkward.

>>
>>321354374
Funny enough that was the original idea of Oblivion. Beside a few focused scripts such as NPC go to X town every weekend to talk to a friend or to shop the only thing it really did was have randomly killed off NPCs that got caught by the guards when they try to steal a loaf of bread because their hunger bar was too high.

I believe one of the early video showcase this by having a NPC get annoyed by her pet dog barking so she used a fire spell to kill it off.

I know what you meant and want but I'm just saying the last time someone even try something close to it they got very lazy with it.

Fallout THREE did that stuff.

Hell, the NORMAL way to play Fallout 2 is to sequence break. Who the hell just waits to get Advanced Power Armor after they already know about it? I guess you can't technically call it sequence breaking if the world is open, but there IS a breadcrumb trail you'd normally follow as far as the main quest is concerned and the high level enemies on the way to camp Navarro can fuck you up.

Say what you want about Bioware. But the hidden Dialog with legion, Tali, Jack, and the others is just top tier stuff.
>Edit Legion is because muh robot
>Bring him with me on Tali loyalty mission
>She starts to warn me about bringing a geth onto the flotilla
>Guards are locked and loaded and tell me to get that thing off the ship.
There's actually paragon and renegade options too. Same when you bring him to recruit Tali
