I mean, I know you just said this but if you want I can elaborate on WHY I think what I do, with no shitposting or buzzwords. I legitimately adore Live A Live, and there are reasons for this. Also admittedly part of the reason why I said what I said is because I don't care about Western games, haven't played most of those, and absolutely detest old Sonic games.

Basically, Live A Live surprised me. Each character story mode is like 2 hours long, so there isn't really any grinding/very little grinding. Plus the short stories means that it gets right to the point, and somehow, despite this, it doesn't take much for the game to tell you everything you need to know about each new setting and its characters, and it spends just enough time on the characters to make you care when tragedy happens in each of the stories. My favorite is the mecha/near future storyline because of this. Besides that, its got really unique gameplay mechanics. They're simple, sure, but they still involve some strategy/learning, like figuring out what enemy weaknesses are and moving around the battlefield to avoid getting hit while doing maximum damage to as many enemies on the field as possible (or the enemy leader), since attacks hit certain areas of the field and only certain attacks are available to you and your enemies. I also like the different overworld abilities you get in each story mode. Like in mecha you can read minds, and in ninja you can make yourself invisible. The mechanics stay fresh and new since they change with each story mode and none of the stories overstay their welcome since they're so short.
Yoko Shimomura is also my favorite composer, and she did a great job of making a fun powerful and hype soundtrack.

Also to add to that, the unique overworld abilities you get in each story are part of puzzles you have to solve in the overworld, which I think adds to the challenge of the game since combat isn't such a big focus in terms of challenge.

It was pretty entertaining. It's not amazing but it's a fun game. I put it for 2014 because I think that was the PC port, and I found 2014 to just be a pretty shitty year so I put it there as an insult despite being a port it was more entertaining than anything else that came out that year unless I missed something.
But yeah, if you can get it on sale and don't mind the tongue in cheek writing it's a pretty entertaining game for me, you can pirate it to try it out too.
