I don't know about hand placed, anon. Pretty sure they use a a plain old tablet and pen with pixel brush. Not nearly as hard as the stuff you see in other games.

I'd like good pixel art too, but not everyone can do it. The art isn't great, but its not trash either and gets the job done. I don't think every game dev should have to be or hire a top tier pixel artist just to make a game they want to make. But it would've been nice to have good art and good everything else.
