This doesn't even come close to telling the whole story. Don't forget that the game also loads cutscenes, including dialogue during quests. For some of the more cutscene-heavy sections of the game (like Chapter 8), the load times are RIDICULOUS and will basically ruin the experience. There are also quite a few quests that have multiple load screens between dialogue, enemies spawning, post-combat chatter etc...
Also, without the data packs you will see egregious texture and actor pop-in. There were times that I spent literally over 20 seconds waiting for a quest giver to load onto the map, or for hi-res textures to load on some of the objects in NLA. Playing without the data packs is terrible and you should really only bother if you absolutely cannot clear the space

I'd recommend one of those small travel hard drives that only need one cable, because most hard drives with a y cable should work, but why risk it?
Also, try to get a drive that doesn't have sleep functions, because sometimes they'll keep going to sleep even if you disable it on the hard drive.

Because it's a ratshit grindfest and it's impossible not to break the game no matter what you do. 60 Skells are overpowered, Ares 90 is disgustingly overpowered, even ground combat is a broken mess once you get the ability to extend overdrive. The only class that can do that reliably is FMJ. No one else has the ability to consistently generate 3000TP outside of Essence Exchange, which can't really be used during combat. I'd wager most players never even touch overdrive because they need the TP for skills, and you get Skells before OD really becomes useful.
I'd honestly rather have Chain Attacks. At least Xenoblade was balanced around chains being a reasonably useful core combat mechanic; overdrive is just impossible to balance since it multiplies your damage something ridiculous like 70x, in addition to increasing your resistances and various other miscellaneous bonuses. At first I thought it was deeper mechanically, but once you get access to infinite overdrive you can literally just spam all your skills in whatever order once they turn white and kill pretty much anything
