4 and especially 5 are pretty big departures from the usual Monster Rancher experience. All the rest of the games have almost no story, let you play as 'yourself' (by never showing the player character) and plop you right into a deceptively complicated game without any helpful instruction. A game which essentially has no end, mind you- you can 'beat' a Monster Rancher game in one sitting but the meat of the game is just fucking around, discovering things, and autistically min-maxing and experimenting with mechanics until you get bored.
If 3 didn't remove fusion I'd say it was the best PS2 title. The cell-shading still looks pretty cute, though, it most closely resembles the PS1/GB/DS titles, and for what it's worth it's un-emulatable at the moment so I'd say buy that one.

Make a Monster Rancher game with an actual budget and properly advertise it this time, especially the CD-reading aspect if possible.
No shitty anime story that ruined EVO, sandbox works best for MR.
Tone back on the 'Digimon' designs MR looked like it was heading towards before it died, keep monsters quirky and simple in concept, none of that flying anime mecha darkness Anubis wizard shit.
Don't go full TECMO by pandering to lonely weebs like the new Digimon games are also trying to do. Keep Pixies as the tiny Tinkerbell fairies they've been since Monster Rancher 3 instead of the titty monsters they were in the original. Maybe throw in multiple waifu/husbando assistants to choose from instead, but nothing so tasteless that it wouldn't have wide appeal, think Harvest Moon.
Make a full-fledged console release with decent graphics that can properly utilize the CD-scanning feature. If that's not possible, make a 3DS game where you can scan (and buy) 'mystery disc' Amiibo cards to generate the rarer monsters, or something.
Make sure it has online trading/battling so it has 'competitive' appeal to the hardcore neckbeards.
Tone back the main game difficulty somewhat, let kiddies 'reincarnate' their dead monsters with a Phoenix Feather or something.
Maybe throw in some Kinect or VR shit where you can play with your monster, pet it and talk to it with voice commands like Hey You Pikachu! for N64 and just chill out.

In general, anyways. Pokemon originally has some bad designs but nearly all of them now are internally consistent with attention to silhouettes and colors, even the 'ugly' ones are usually aesthetically appealing.
I think Digimon are cooler, but like 40% of Digimon look like absolutely dogshit and are often visually inconsistent with eachother.
Monster Rancher has never visually offended me, and I like the rustic theme about it, but they've never settled on an artstyle and some of the monsters are literally just unchanged animals. At least Rattata had the decency to be a purple rat instead of just a normal rat. And as much as I don't mind it within the context of the games, literally 95%+ of the monsters are palette swaps.

Yeah, I like that there's tons of variations for each Monster. It makes the fusing cool with traits being combined, and it makes the creatures seem more realistic than Digimon or Pokemon with different, but similar 'breeds', along with letting you get monsters in the color you want.
Plus, having a main pool of 30 or so monster types per game is kind of refreshing compared to Pokemon's 800+ or whatever it is now.
