Yeah same here. I played I-VIII this year for the first time, but I got really bored with IX and the job system annoyed me (I liked it in III, VI, and VIII, but I do not like how it's handled in IX at all) and stopped playing shortly after unlocking jobs. I want to at least finish the main story though, so maybe I'll just pick a job for everyone and not change it. I hear it's pretty easy to get through the main story that way.

Honestly? I started with the first and moved from there. I liked it. But I do that with just about everything. If you're afraid of old games or just want to dive into the better ones (because honestly the first two are not representative of the whole series), try III-V. III is great for forming your own party and exploring. IV has a more classic static party (though you can use whoever you want for more than half the game) and is all around nice. V has a monster catching mechanic and you can use whichever formation of monsters you want in your team. It also has one of the more interesting stories in the DQ games.
VIII is also a great place to start, but I'd wait for the 3DS version. I've never played the PS2 version but I have played the 3DS version, and it was great.

I can't access the copy/pasta I made myself awhile ago so I may forget some things but:
- Worse graphics
- Some censored Jessica costumes, Gelda wears shorts now, two censored scenes
- Orchestral audio and voice acting (though the English PS2 version had both of these)
- Two new dungeons (one is pretty meh, one is just a string of buffed up past bosses)
- Instant alchemy
- Save anywhere
- Maps of all dungeons automatically except the Dragon God's
- Can see how much exp needed to level up in menu finally
- Morrie and Gelda (Red) playable. They're great characters too.
- New ending(s) with Jessica
- New items
- On-screen enemies. Not nearly as annoying as it was in DQ VII 3DS
- 1-3 costumes for everyone, new costumes for Jessica
- New photo quest
- HP/MP restored on level up (really helpful at the beginning of the game)
- New SS rank in the Monster Battle Road
I'm pretty sure I'm forgetting some stuff, but that's just off the top of my head. Some changes suck, but it's mostly for the better.

Well it's up to you. If graphics are more important than the slew of other nice changes then fine, enjoy the PS2 version.
How's the PC port of DQ Heroes? I'm debating which platform to get it on. I have a pretty moderately powered PC but with Tecmo's quality of ports I'm wary that it may not be enough to warrant a slightly better graphical experience.
