It's a good game with a very unique setting.
People are also enamored by the Souls game formula; tight gameplay, punishing difficulty and vague but discoverable storyline woven into the gameplay.
I have to admit, Bloodborne's setting has stuck with me the most out of all the souls games, though. It's a great game. Not worth buying a PS4 over on single merit, though.

It's a casual Souls game. Much easier, lots of mechanics have been simplified or stripped out. Aside from that most things are just name changes. Titanite is now Blood Stone, Estus is Blood Vials, Souls are Blood Echoes. There's a bit of a pattern.it's probably the edgiest game ever made

elemental gems override all other gems and change a weapon to whatever element they have. the weapon then uses it's base damage and arcane scaling for damage. additional elemental gems will up the scaled damage, you can put in cold gems to raise the arcane scaling, which also ups the damage, or you can use flat damage gems. flat damage gems can give a weapon more than one damage type, but that makes little sense. weapons with innate arcane or blood damage can not be changed into elemental weapons.

What? I'm defending the game. I went through my first playthrough offline since I didn't want any note spoilers/help and only noticed frame drops in very few places. The first bridge in Old Yharnam comes to mind. I had a fair bit more when I played online, specifically when bell ringing/co-oping.
The main technical issue I'd level at the game is the camera freakouts at times, really. Cleric Beast especially.

Correct.
A combination of all of these things, enemies, weapons and locations, make up the setting.
Which still makes it unique. The Order and Van Helsing focused largely on vampires and werewolf mythos, and those settings are fine. Castlevania also rarely strayed from strictly gothic fantasy.
Bloodborne, to my knowledge, is on of the few games that explores a Lovecraftian view of cosmic beings and knowledge that drives one mad, and also spins its own yarn in the process. Haven't played a game like Bloodborne until I played Bloodborne.

When fighting Gherman I find I can only parry him during the first phase and then only about half the time. He just eats my shots sometime without getting staggered. Is my bloodtinge/gun upgrade too low? Or should the parry be 100% if my timing's right and I'm just mistaken in thinking I'm landing the shots consistently?
