I feel like any of the playstation 1 Final Fantasy games is an excellent starting point. That or wing it and jump into Final Fantasy I if you're okay with basic old school JRPGS. If you must play something more modern, pick up FFX.
My favorites are the SNES FF games because I grew up with them, but honestly OP most of these games are pretty good even the weak ones. There is no bad place to start other than Final Fantasy II and arguably the XIII series. You should probably avoid those to begin with.

I was kinda in the same boat as you. Always had an interest in FF but never knew where to start. I chose FF VII because of the remake and Cloud in smash and I'm having a blast. I plan on playing at least IV - X.

Dude what? That's not why I don't like VIII as much as some of the others. I like the game, but I feel like they rushed the shit out of it and it was too ambitious. They were trying to follow up FF7 and that's a tall order. The GF system just wasn't very fun to play around with in my opinion. The rest of the game is mostly fine to me, I've defended the game on numerous occasions.

That shit is turn-based anon. Sounds to me like you have a hate-boner for turn based but make exceptions for whatever reason. That's okay but your opinion is not absolute.
I love all of those games you mentioned but still love Dragon Quest and FF. XIII is pretty shitty and the combat isn't even that great because you only control 1 character. Leveling your character is even more basic than the sphere grid from FFX. All of the characters are unlikable except for Sazh. I just don't get why you think its so much better than the older games, but that's okay.

Both have great writing. I like the SMT turn-based combat and 90% of Mother is text so I can accept the combat.
Games when you use one main character and numerous demons/personas/pokemon are fun for me. That's why I'm hyped for Cyber Sleuth.

You play all of them from the beginning.
1 and 2 on the PSP emulator.
3 and 4 on steam.
5 and 6 on the SNES.
7,8 on steam
9 on PSone emulator
10 and 10-2 on Emulator or the HD re-release if you can spare the money
11 is a dead mmo long past it's glory so skip it.
12 emulate it. Make sure to use a translated international version
13, 13-2, and LR13 on steam
14 is a pretty good mmo

Graphics are washed out for the dark GBA screen on 6 and the music is not as good, but the translation is much better.
You can get patches that attempt to restore the music and the graphics to be more like the original. Ideally there would be a patch to put the modern translation in the original version.
The fact you put FF10-2 at the low tier means you don't understand much. The story was mediocre sure but the constant job changing in battles made the game fun and actually really interactive.

Trust me. I hate X too. Its pretty mediocre as well and most other titles in the series is alot better. Really bothers me people put X on a pedestal but leave x-2 in the dirt when theyre the same in terms of story but atleast X-2 did combat alot better.
