The game wouldn't have really been any better or worse if it had nothing to do with Star Fox, although I do suspect that people would be a lot less critical of it just because everyone loves Rare's old games, and yet it's hip and fashionable to bash Star Fox Adventures for being an "incorrect" Star Fox game.
Personally, I still like the game as-is and I like Krystal's character as part of the Star Fox universe. If the game had come out on the N64 as Dinosaur Planet, it probably would have been overlooked because of how late in the console cycle it would have come out.
