Liked them a lot, they're hard as hell but mostly fair. Kinda reminded me of the Classicvania's in a way. If they ever make a third one I hope we'll get an Asagi Wars 2 as well.

Can someone give me some direction re: Disgaea 1?
There's walkthroughs and shit but my problem is I don't know when to do stuff. I get that I can upgrade my units in the Dark Assembly, but I don't know why and when I should be doing so. And what about the item world? I'm in the first chapter right now and it's all kind of overwhelming. Walkthroughs, and the game itself, tells me what these are, but I'm not sure how and when I should be taking advantage of any of this.
Also, how many characters should I be levelling at once? Closer to 5 or max party at 10?

When I played D1 I had the starter generics plus some other decent leveled healers and mages
Game didnt really pose a threat since I just made laharl a walking damage sponge with all those armor.
I didnt bother with item world while playing the story though, so you should be fine anon, just keep leveling up your characters. The itme world and all the other shit pretty come into play when you start post game
