By best class what do you mean?
When you first start out you get 3 starting options.
Fighter - standard sword and shield user
Strider - Dagger + shortbow
Mage - basic magic
There is nothing wrong with fighter if you like typical sword and shield gameplay. However I find strider to be the most fun, anything with a bow lets you get the fully enjoyment out of the game. Mage is absolutely terrible, you only play it if you want to grind out some of your sorcerer abilities early.
Once you get to gran soren, you can switch to all the other classes.

You can change class and change your look of your character very early if your unsatisfied. It isn't the be-all or end-all like in Skyrim you get an object pretty early in the game that allows you to do this!!
