it's the coloring. Ken's old style was visually distinct, you could immediately tell that what you were looking at was a pokemon because of how he colored. It looks like it was all done with colored pencils and is quite charming and aesthetically pleasing.
The new pokemon lack this, sure some designs have tried to imitate his older work but all the new pokemon look like they were drawn up in a computer program, colored in digitally, and suffer from lack of distinct visual marking. You couldn't tell them apart from a Neopet or invisimal or any other expy all those shitty browser and mobile games try to bite off of early pokemon design
