Why do so many people still think VC1 is the best game in that series? The graphics were better but are they really that important compared to the other improvements that were made (especially by 3). And I don't understand the complaints about the split maps in the psp games. All the big maps in VC1 did was add to how overpowered scouts were compared to other units.

I just started VC3 and it seems okay. I'm pretty sure I've already seen some map segments repeated (and possibly random enemy positions?), which is a bummer. I look forward to finding out what sort of improvements this game has made.
I really liked the big maps in VC1. I think scouts being overpowered is a separate issue.

As much as I like 2 despite all the hate it gets, I gotta say that 3 really raised the bar. It requires actual strategy since Interception Fire fucking hurts this time around.
The main issue (that I had) with 2 was the retarded credit/class system, specifically getting those damn diplomas and the mostly random certificates.
And this could have easily been fixed by 1) making the class unlocked by that character permanent or 2) if 1 is too easy, making the class unlocked by that character permanent when that character masters that class that they unlocked.
It's like they said, "Hey, we're putting it on a handheld, so let's make it grindy for the sake of it being grindy!"

Well, the first one is for PS3 and PC (with a PS4 remaster coming sometime next year).
The second one is for the PSP (you can emulate it fairly easily, I heavily recommend the undub) and has been localized
The third game is also on the PSP, but has not been localized (though funny enough the artbook for 3 has been localized). However, most of it has been fan translated barring the DLC/extra missions, IIRC.

Well, VC1 is coming to PS4. There's no plan to remaster 2 or 3 as far as we know. Also emulating them is quite easy since PPSSPP runs on damn near anything. Even my 8 year old toaster can run it decent.

In 2 I never used a tank just because the utility APC was so damn good and the flamethrower pretty much killed everything. Seriously, nothing could beat how useful the APC was.

1 and 3 are pretty much equal to me because they both have things that balance each other out.
1 has the advantage of big maps and the most grounded story premise of the 3. But it has the worst unit balance and is too easy to break.
3 has a lot of objective variety, much more balanced, a lot of refinements to the gameplay that make it a smoother experience than 1. But it's limited by the PSP by having broken up maps, reuses most maps from 2, and the level up system, while it works, I would say doesn't work as well for VC as leveling up classes like 1 and 2.
2 is the bottom one for sure though. Shitty premise and setting, godawful system for changing classes, too easy, useless Orders, 6 unit limit on broken up maps, and although it made improvements on 1's gameplay, 3 basically refined every single thing from 2 and made it much better.
