I still have no fucking clue why people genuinely thought Shantae would have a chance. Putting aside being acknowledged through massive votings, exactly how well known is she to the higher ups of Japan? Yes, Shantae got a Japan release, but does Nintendo even know of its existence? I sincerely don't so think on the merits that she's an indie character. Same goes with Shovel Knight.

For the morons who keep saying Shantae and other characters had no chance. The Ballot was open for ANY Video Game character to vote and as the people behind smash were taken these votes into consideration, they'd OBVIOUSLY know about the character by then. Each game character had a chance of getting in, no matter HOW iconic the characters are or if they're released in Japan. Why don't we just have the game only playable in Japan if you keep moaning about characters being in Japan. Just because a character didn't get into the game, it doesn't mean they didn't have a chance. By that logic, K.Krool and other unchosen ballot choices had no chance either. And to the idiot who thinks that Nintendo doesn't know of Shantae's japanease release, did it ever cross your mind that the Smash Team do tesearch on a video game character and franchise before making their choices? Not to mention the japanease release of Shantae and the Pirate's Curse is exclusive to the NINTENDO 3DS and voters on the Smash Ballot most likley wrote about Shantae's Japanease release.

Bozon got pretty annoying with his vote shilling and it became apparent that his only interest in her in Smash was the translation into Half Genie Hero sales and skyrocketing of the Shantae franchise into the mainstream. Shantaefags ate this up and became Bozon's little drones. They conducted their own polls in their own closed space, demographic, sample size that is Reddit. Completely unaware they are not the majority of the voters and truly were delusional of their own grandeur. Just because Bayo voters didn't kick and scream as loud, doesn't mean that they were less in number.
But it's not like numbers even mattered to begin with. The poll nor anything Nintendo said about it promised the top voted character will become DLC. Sakurai was always going to cherry pick whichever ones he wanted to do most from among the top 10 voted characters.
