It's totally valid though because people judge games too often on the context of certain things they expect from a series.
For example, ignoring anyone's personal opinions - the main complaints about FF13 were all based around shit that, without being an FF title, would not be mentioned as complaints. Linearity (even on that level) is pretty common in JRPGs, plenty of JRPGs don't have over worls, plenty of JRPGs don't have airships, and so on.
Those were THE main complaints about 13, and yet if you ignore the SERIES that pretty much invalidates them.
Other times you get spinoffs, which are technically part of a series yet could be completely different types of games, like for example Borderlands and Telltale's Borderland games.
Artificial difficulty.
