Turn based games always throw some shit at you that can only be defeated by a lucky crit or grinding.

It's not inherently bad, and often serves as a learning mechanism for the player, but it's still something which relies solely on your lack of knowledge to achieve it's goal of fucking you. If it isn't based on skill or something which would be unavoidable without prior knowledge, its artificial difficulty.
