I was going to come up with other reasons why Vergil is great, but that about does it really.
His VA performance was very well-done as well, and Vergil actually loses in the end. The narrative treats him like the asshole he pretty much is, really. He's not really let off easily.

The whole reason this Vergil works is because he has Dante to temper the edge. They play off each other so well, which culminates in the fight against Arkham. It's very well done.
It does not work in DmC as both Vergil and Dante are edge. They don't play off each other, they aren't likeable in any way, and they're just plain annoying.

Yeah his intentions were entirely sympathetic. Too bad he unleashed a demonic tower in the middle of a city, the erection of which no doubt killed very many people numbering at least in the hundreds, if not at least a thousand as well. Not to mention this also having the side-effect of unleashing demons everywhere on the town as well. Not like Vergil really cared, judging from his social Darwinist, "Might controls everything," philosophy. If you couldn't defend yourself, you are weak in his eyes and absolutely deserve getting shat on, if not outright killed.
That's not even getting into his very antagonistic, if not outright abusive relationship with his twin brother, hurting him in ways that would kill him if it weren't for Dante being half-demon and nearly as powerful as he by that point.
Vergil's pretty much a dick. The only thing that saves him is the little bit of honor and justice in him, that makes him just a bit better than straight up evil fuckers like Arkham.

Also forgot to mention he did this for entirely selfish reasons, his pretty much sociopathic need for power. He's incredibly self-centered, essentially indirectly killing many, many people, all for the sake of a promise of becoming more powerful, which may or may not even work.
Now what Vergil would actually DO with that power is anyone's guess really. I think he'd be pretty benevolent with it, all things considered.

That's actually a pretty good point.
I think contrary to DmC's ending (which I didn't even have in mind when thinking about this initially), Vergil would probably fuck off and only come out of where ever he's lurking to fend off some great devilish power that would threaten humanity, but also primarily seeing it as an opportunity to acquire more demonic power. Also protecting Dante to some extent and whoever else may possibly grow closer to either of them. Even for all his antagonism, he'd probably feel like he would have to do so, especially since that sort of thing was exactly why he wanted to become more powerful in the first place. I'd say after acquiring more power, he'd probably at least make some attempt at vaguely reconciling with Dante on some level.
Or he'd probably take on Mundus, actually having Sparda's power, having rejuvenated from the events in DMC3 rather than beaten and tired like he was in that game, defeat him, and become the ruler of Hell. Anything after that is anyone's guess really.

Yeah, I'm not sure which direction he would have went but I feel like if he would return in DMC5 he would become something similar to a wandering swordsman.
I don't see him ever really trying to make up for trying to kill Dante all those years ago or leaving Nero in Fortuna all alone but I don't see Dante taking offense to it, he'd probably be happy that he didn't end up killing his brother and would try to make the most of it.
Nero and Vergil would be pretty cool to see as far as interactions go since I think it would help Nero with his character development and show whether or not Yamato means more to him than his own flesh and blood, assuming he wants to get it back.
I'd also kill to see his interactions with Trish since she looks almost exactly like Eva and if UMVC3 is anything to go off of he'll hate her.

I could see Vergil feeling guilty on at least some level of the whole, "Trying to kill Dante and become a demonic god," thing. Vergil's a dick, remember, but he doesn't see himself as being above Dante either, or at least not terribly so. Remember the cutscene after the Arkham fight in DMC3? They can still act like brothers when they want to.

I do agree that his interactions with Nero are something to look forward to should they make DMC5 and bring him back.
