There was a breath of fire game that I was emulating as a kid and there's a boss battle near the start of the game that you can't win but I thought you were suppose to win it so I kept reloading my save state over and over to no avail. Eventually I let the death animation happen and the game progresses but damn that pissed me off

You're full of shit. There are no unloseable battles in any Pokemon game. The first battle's AI is programmed to be exceptionally retarded, but it's still possible to lose. Even in the newest games you could lose the first battle, but your rival just challenges you again until you win.
