Marth got in since he's the first Lord and most decently consistent face of the series.
Roy got in for marketing at first but people liked him enough to have him come back.
Ike got in because Path of Radiance is really fucking good and Radiant Dawn was released not long before Brawl as well.
Robin got in because he was just lucky. His game had just come out and caught Sakurai's attention when deciding the roster and he even said in an interview that if Awakening's release was just a couple months earlier or later Robin might not have even been considered.
Lucina was a costume that got promoted to quick and easy roster spot.
Corrin got in because half marketing for the west, half being popular in Japan at the time.
There is a lot, but I can't exactly disagree with much of it when looking at how it happened step by step.
